Lovely restaurant in a great spot in Paighton harbour, unfortunately let down by the service (maybe they were having a bad day). We were greeted at 5pm when they opened and although we had a reservation they told us that we had to clear out by 8pm which felt entirely achievable when we walked in. Little did we know how slow the service would be. We were given 20+ minutes to look at the menu. Served warm bottles of water, and the service was generally quite inattentive and poor, we were one of 4 parties at 5pm when the restaurant wasn't busy, kids meals were quite poor, the mini sausages were cheap jumbo sausages from a chip shop, and the peas were hard and undercooked, the scallops I had hadn't been cleaned thoroughly and left a gritty sandy texture in my mouth. The muscles were great though as were our mains of fish of the day, although the red wine juis was a bit overpowering for the hake. The table wasn't cleared quickly, in fact they forgot to clear the starters when they brought out the mains. We waited 30+ minutes to get the desert menu and decided in the end not to bother. The staff were very friendly and chatty so in all a mixed review. The mean for 2 adults and 2 children came to £97.35 so quite expensive for the experience. It might be better on a different night with just adults. We may...

Last summer my family and I ate here and were so excited to return, as it was the best meal out we had ever had. Roll forward to this year, and I'm sorry to say that the amazing experience we had previously enjoyed, was not repeated. The service was incredibly slow, despite not being busy. It was very difficult to get anyone's attention when needed at any point. The food was good in general, however my fondant potato was extremely burnt, I was surprised that it was still served. For starters, 4 of us had ordered cheesy garlic bread. When another member of the table was ordering their starter, he checked that the starter he wanted didn't have garlic in. The waitress checked that he wasn't allergic, which he isn't, just hates it! Roll on to when our food finally arrived, all 4 'garlic' breads were cheese on toast. This was raised, but the waitress never got back to us. My 8 year old has ADHD and autism, so sitting still for a prolonged length of time isn't easy. We were there for nearly 3 hours, despite no desserts. We ended up getting up and paying on our way out, after waiting 15 mins for the bill to be bought over after asking.

The whole experience was very disappointing, especially as we were all celebrating a birthday, and had been really looking forward to returning. Safe to say, we won't be...

Terrible food and pretty average service.

Went last night for a meal (6th oct) arrived not long after it opened so there was only 3 other tables in the restaurant.

Ordered a fish and chips….which was frankly the worst I have ever had. It was barely warm, and under seasoned. Tasted like nothing! The mushy peas was also cold and tasted of water. I should have just sent it back.

My wife ordered a fish of the day which came with pasta and a lobster bisque sauce. There was no lobster bisque sauce, the fish was fine but under seasoned and the whole dish lacked flavour. It’s was a very poorly executed dish/ concept.

We waited over 50mins for 2 plates of food that was well below average. We was so hungry that we just eat the food within 10mins and then left.

I did tell the girl when we left how bad it was and my response was “I’ll let the kitchen know”

A complete disgrace of a place who need to rethink their whole service flow or just give up and go! Honestly a total joke of a place!

Most of the real reviews seen to say the same thing.

Very disappointing, will not be returning and will not be recommending to anyone.

Great view, that’s about it and I’m sure will continue to con people because of...

A hidden gem! This unassuming (on the outside) restaurant proved a great find! The food tasted and looked exquisite! The ingredients were fresh, of high quality, and the chef seems to have the magic touch. The restaurant's interior is beautiful, with a marine theme going on, both colour-wise and in terms of the decoration style. The waiting staff were very knowledgeable about the menu, dilligent and professional. Everything looked immaculately clean and well maintained, with a superb attention to detail. We understood that the Scottish owners took over an old café some years ago, and completely reinvented the place! The whole restaurant has an undeniable "feel-good" vibe about it, and the views from the terrace (there is seating available there too) towards the harbour are nothing short of amazing! All in all, I spent an enchanted evening with my friend at TJ's, over a scrumptious dinner. So, if you spend some time in Paignton and want to have a great meal for a decent price, this is a fantastic place that will deliver just that. And then some!... We will certainly come back.

As you can see, I very rarely leave negative reviews but sadly this really wasn't a great experience. Outside was dirty & should have gone with our gut reaction to not go in. Had booked for a 50th birthday meal. Waiter didn't know what gins were available to start with. This weird spiral crisp thing came out with a tiny pot of Branston Pickle. Partner had Mussell's to start, small portion for the price & sauce not great. I had what was meant to be garlic mushrooms, really not sure what the purple colour was, tasted weird and no garlic flavour. I had lamb shank, it was meant to be with garlic flavour mash, it had no flavour & tasted like smash. Vegetables were minimal. Partner had steak which was pre sliced, never seen anything like it. If we'd have paid half of what we paid I'd have still been disappointed. Such a shame as the view is amazing. I leave so many positive reviews but this was sadly so bad & especially bad as it was a 50th birthday. Please don't waste your money. We couldn't get out quick enough.

We had a fabulous meal here and I would thoroughly recommend trying to get a booking here. It's a family run affair and quickly fills up it's fairly limited but well spaced tables. As with most places these days the menu is restricted but it still feels as if there is sufficient choice. We were both here for the seafood and this is definitely where they excel. I had scallops with parma ham and strawberry coulis followed by hake in beurre blanc sauce with samphire. My partner went for a dish of mussels in a sauce made extra special by smoked lardons. That was the best combination of the night. It was all perfectly complemented by a very crisp sauvignon blanc. This is an unpretentious place but serves really high quality dinners full of fresh ingredients in both classic and adventurous combinations. Well worth a visit, special occasion or not.
