A lovely little seaside town dating back to Victorian times. Boasting a fine sandy beach, complete with its own peir reaching out into the sea. As you approach the beach, you'll need to traverse the beach lawns, used regularly throughout the year for funfairs complete with donkey's, motorcycle meetings and displays, vintage car shows and of course in June the Paignton air show. Walking around the town you'll find the railway station, with connections to Torquay, Exeter, Dawlish and beyond, the steam railway also operates from this station where Braveheart can be seen regularly under steam and ready to go. Around the town there's a great selection of takeaways, bars and cafés, with an adornment of games arcades and plenty of shops selling all the usual seaside nicknackery For us the only downside was that with very few exceptions most of the cafés and bar's are very pet unfriendly, yet you can go to Dawlish, Dawlish Warren, Torquay and they can't wait to get you through the doors. Having said that, on a fine sunny day there's no better place to be. Would recommend. ps if you find this review helpful, please...
Read morePaignton Sands is a long beach with the red sand typical of this part of the country. It starts at Paignton harbour in the south and continues to the promontory where the Redcliffe Hotel stands. At low tide the beach continues on to Preston Sands which ends at another red cliff around which you can rock hop to Hollicombe beach at low tide. In the middle of Paignton beach is the pier, with a café and all sorts of fruit machines and other games. In 2018/2019 the council passed across responsibility for public conveniences to a private company, who now charge 30p for the use of a loo, where previously it was free. How this will impact on tourist numbers is yet to be seen. Along the promenade are several refreshment booths serving hot meals and ice cream. Paignton Green runs parallel to the beach and hosts many events and carnivals in the summer. On the Green is a geopark which is a play area for children and has climbing frames etc. There are also two...
Read moreThe beach seems to be divided into parts one where dog owners can walk and swim their dogs and another for families with kids. We enjoyed the time at the beach, with many failed attempts at building a sand castle. The sand was either too wet or too stony, we couldn't get the right texture to make the castles stand but it was worth the try. The water was cold at first but as the rising sun begin to sting our backs and faces, we were rewarded with a warm glow of calm tides. There were lots of budding surfers and water sports and everyone looked like they ware having a fantastic time. Once in a while our feet got caught in sea weed that was ticklish and...
