Went for the quiz night and a meal, and had a cracking time.
The food was wonderful, the onion rings and chips especially, and the quiz was very entertaining.
The host was witty but brief, clear yet cunning, and although some of the music was from unfamiliar decades, there seemed to be enough in the questions for everyone to shine.
However, the night of our visit may well go down in the pub's history.
There was obviously plenty of tension in the air, and this was due to two competing teams, from the same business networking group, partaking in jovial banter, with an undercurrent of expectance.
Apparently, all week, one side had been suggesting they would be victorious, you'll never guess which...
At one table was a team was called 'Pink Ladies' on another 'Better Than The Pink Ladies'.
Who would win? Which would one would get "the Danny"?
After the marks had been added, the host announced the scores in reverse order, and the tension in the pub began to build.
You could hear a drip from the Guinness tap drop.
The host must have been wetting himself because he knew that 'Pink Ladies' and 'Better Than The Pink Ladies' were in the top two, but he milked enough to keep drinks on the table and breaths held.
And, as he announced the glorious victor, there was a roar from the crowd, gasps and cheers from the winners, and excruciating howls from their opponents, because by one solitary point, the 'Pink Ladies' had triumphed against all odds.
It all seemed very good natured, handshakes all round, and it was great to see a table of very happy 'pink' faces.
Overall, the Golden Lion staff were wonderful and attentive, kept the table clear of empties and did everything with a...
Read moreOh dear! I had booked a table for 10 ladies and although I had not been to the pub before, seeing all the online reviews felt quite confident all would ok. That was not the case. No-one acknowledged our arrival so I had to get a member of staff to come and take our order, she then came back to tell us 3 of the dishes were unavailable, 1 of which was on the specials board. I was told when I booked there might be a bit of a wait as there is only a small kitchen, I didn't expect that wait to be 1 hour! When the meals did arrive the fish was very overcooked with some of the batter too crisp to eat. Only vanilla ice cream on offer, and the chocolate brownie sundae came as a brownie on a plate. The menu in the pub was very different from that shown on line. We paid separately at the counter which I had agreed with a staff member at the beginning of the evening, however I'm not sure why 2 ladies who had the exact same meal - fish and chips and ice cream - were charged 2 different prices! All the staff were very pleasant and apologetic for the delay, but I did feel inexperience played a part in...
Read moremost of the waiters where ok and polite but the chicken we ordered had gone off and it smelt like fish and also tasted like it, when we complained to the chef/landlord he simply told us that we had to pay for the food we refused but he just said that was the way the chicken was cooked. The chicken went off. We also ordered 2 meals that had lamb steak in them, when the food arrived we couldn't cut or eat the lamb because it was that tough and it was also extremely dry. the people next to us had also ordered the lamb steak and they were also having trouble eating it and the whole time we were there they where still attempting to cut the lamb. when we complained about these things the landlord was extremely rude and impolite. i do not recommend going here as the food we had was not extremely nice either and the only good thing about this was how polite the...
