Delightful Dinner
My partner and I went to the Bangkok Café for my birthday meal. With the demise of our favourite – the Thai House – we decided we would stay with the Thai tradition at the café owned by the same family.
The less formal style of the Café made the meal very relaxing and the food was delicious.
We started with Dom Yam Gung – a delicious and spicy prawn soup with lemon grass and galangal. A lovely warming bowl of deliciousness was a great start to the meal.
We then shared three starters – Bor Bia Sot, Bla Muk Tord and Larb Gai – The tamarind flavour of the Bor Bia was wonderful, the crispy calamari of the bla muk tord was perfect with the chilli sauce and the minced chicken came in lovely lettuce leaves making them so easy to eat. All of them were delicious.
For mains, my partner went for Bed Grapow, duck with tulsi (thai basil) and chillies with a yellow rice and steamed veg. As with the other elements of the meal the balance of flavours were perfect and the food fresh and crisp. My main course was Gai Yang Som Dam, a roast chicken dish with a sharp and taste som dam salad and sticky rice. I’ve been eating Thai food for thirty years, and I am still surprised by the richness of the flavour.
Overall the Bangkok Café turned out to be a tasty experience in a simple setting, we...

The red curry did taste nice but it definitely is not an authentic Thai dish. May have been a different take on the red curry but would have preferred a more authentic flavour. The main disappointment was the other dish I ordered was the pad Grapow (chilli and basil) which is usually one of my favourite meals. Unfortunately on this occasion it was very oily and full of fish sauce - it was overwhelming that it also stank of fish. I couldn't eat it. It was really disappointing as I ordered the same dish last time and...
Read moreLooking around for something South East Asian in Cardiff I came across this place and it looked great. The décor is up to date and modern, the staff are very welcoming and helpful and I loved the website. After ordering our food it was on our table very quickly and looked great but I thought it tasted very sweet. The staff once again were really helpful and informed me that it was due to the coconut milk but I found that I needed the wine (nice dry house white) to get rid of the sweetness, even though I have a very sweet tooth. Overall an ok dinner, the portions sizes were generous and I might go back, or I may try...
