Starters of garlic style bread, butter topped pate, posh sounding cheese sticks or squid in breadcrumbs, all of which we poor in taste and quality might usually have had me calling for the check far earlier. Our main meals were far better than the starters, especially so the sea bass which two of us agreed was grilled off to almost perfection. Those that took vegetarian offerings were more than happy with the menu and everyone loved the healthy homely style fries. Burger meals passed with flying colors though I believe 'Bill' needs to up the ante by improving the taste. Steak is on the menu as 16oz, 8oz, or as a smaller offering with egg and fries, so we tried the latter two only to discover that the choice does not include 'cooked rare'. Ordering 'medium' steaks and 'well done' we discovered that these must be cooked by prescribed time without any consideration to the thickness or quality of beef being used. My steak was cooked to a medium standard at the thicker end but was ruined elsewhere, another had half a steak that he struggled to chew plus was almost raw. Finally the steak ordered well done was absolutely spot on which goes to show why we as a group could not reach an agreement on the steak used at Bill's. No puddings were ordered, which is quite rare for our group but perhaps demonstrates how let down we were in general by poorly executed cooking skills. In my view the food was fine, good in places perhaps, but in need of improvement. The waitress executed her job to perfection at every stage which is a rare credit in my opinion, that coupled with the ambiance did improve the mood and general enjoyment of...
Read moreAs a student, my friends and I participated in the bottomless pancake offer for £5 - this is only on specific days so make sure to check before you book! We were greeted well and given plenty of options of seating, we decided a corner table would be best as we had lots of topics to talk about. After 15 mins of waiting, we did the awkward hand signal to ask someone to take our order. We were reassured by Malika that our order would be taken shortly after she took another table’s order. A further 10 mins later, our order had still not been taken. I will provide them with some leniency as they did just seat a large table. Eventually after a 30 mins wait for someone to take our order, we were finally served by a different waitress (apologies I did not get her name, but she was a young, blonde girl). Malika almost immediately came over to apologise copiously for not returning to take our order. We reassured her it was ok because they were too busy and spread out for the amount of staff. The manager served us our drinks with a simple “I’m sorry for the wait” - didn’t seem very sympathetic or helpful as we had observed him having a chat with the chefs practically throughout our entire wait. Not impressed with the management skills. Evidently a lack of communication within the team. The food itself was lovely, most notably the biscoff pancakes were divine. Personally, I don’t have the biggest sweet tooth so could not take proper advantage of the bottomless offer, barely...
Read moreI feel like the food and service quality has gone down since a couple of years ago. At around 4-5 pm on a Sunday many of the menu items were out (including but not limited to coke, the house beer and burrata cheese), the potatoes and fries were clearly frozen and they were cooked as if they had been microwaved, chicken on the burger was dry and bland on its own (they attempted to hide this with an overpowering spicy sauce) and the bun was almost stale. One of us also ordered a cloudy apple juice (for £3) and was given watery apple juice clearly made from concentrate with ice in it. Additionally there were dirty glasses on the table from previous customers which we had to ask to be changed and we also had to ask for cutlery for our mains since they were taken away with the starters and we weren't given new ones. Service was awfully slow for a nearly empty restaurant both this time and the previous time we went about 6 months ago, and that time we ordered steaks that very clearly had fake grill marks on them (so they had used food colouring or something to add them) - one of the people in our party who is a trained chef noticed this. The menu has also been reduced significantly since a few years ago (resembles a TGI Fridays now) and in terms of quality of the burgers we agreed that KFC or Five Guys would have been a better choice in terms of freshness and flavour and much cheaper. Hate it when this happens but I can't recommend Bill's until they make some...
