I frequent the old Ale House every other week meeting my friend under the guise of discussing our writing , however, it seems to be more about the drinking and less about the writing. The pub has a fantastic ambience from the moment you walk in and feel the crunch of the monkey nut shells underfoot (yes free monkey nuts that you can fling the shells on the floor with gay abandonment, it feels so naughty but so good to do!) The bar is an ale lovers delight with a fast array to choose from, don't fret my lovely cider drinkers there is a great selection on offer for you too! Now, they do not serve food apart from the obligatory crisps etc and of course free monkey nuts, but this is certainly not a negative, quite the contrary. You are welcome to bring your own food in! For me this is pure joy as I rock up with my waitrose bag (ok lidl) filled with two plates, slate cheese board, at least 5 cheeses, Chutneys, biscuits and if I'm feeling a little wild charcuterie, this is lovingly assembled on the table and the drinking and feasting begins. So, you may think they have missed out by not serving food I say, "nay" This keeps us drinking there all night rather than spreading my wealth around the bars of Truro, it also means I would not dream of going to another bar on my twice-monthly jaunt. So my friends, pack your bags with your favourite nibbles and go and enjoy the great beer and...
Read moreGreat selection of real ales, all served by knowledgeable and welcoming staff. This place is likely to suffer from it's own success as space and seating are at a premium...although I'm not sure that there isn't another floor upstairs, but being disabled, this would be out of reach for me.
Quite amazingly they allow you to bring in outside food and although one review on here mentioned 'not smelly fish and chips', on my visit a table of 3 had exactly that and nobody seemed to bother them? Maybe the staff were just to busy?
Be aware that CAMRA members are entitled to 10% discount on the home brewed selection. Free WiFi. No car park.
Highly recommended.
UPDATE: Apologies for the fish and chips meals. Somehow I have managed to confuse 2 entirely different establishments...only one of which is TOAH in Truro. So possibly the other commentators comment on this food source, as being not acceptable, is the correct one. I must have a check up for my...
