Visited Street Lane bakery after hunting down some Jewish bread for my grandad. After travelling from the other side of the city centre, I decided to treat myself to some cakes and a coffee but I was left very disappointed... Although my mocha didn't taste of chocolate, it was still nice coffee and despite the chocolate mousse cake slice being delicious, I am rating the bakery a 2* as the other cake I bought was moldy, yes moldy! The young man who served me was pleasant but before I noticed the mold, I did point out that this particular cake was dry, stale and hard to cut into but his only response was "ok, I'll let someone know". Then when I discovered the mould I took it back inside and whilst I was stood there, he took it to whom I presume was a manager and one of the bakers who I overheard confirming "yeah, that's mold"! But as I walked back outside both just stared at me like I did something wrong in returning the mouldy cake but neither thought to apologise!! The moldy cake was £4.25 and although I was given a refund, I will not be returning to spend a single penny more because of the the management not having the decency to even apologise! Once I had finished my coffee, I took the empty cup back inside but was disgusted to see that the two eclairs that were on the same piece of slate as the moldy cakes were still sat there, waiting to be sold to the next unknowing customer... Very poor on your part Street...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe frequently nip in to this bakery for a treat. Today we came a bit late in the day (12:30ish) and picked up a poppy cholla and a lotus doughnut.
The poppy cholla was great - lovely and light with a good crust. This was Ā£3.30 if I remember and it was a very healthy sized loaf for that price. These loaves also keep pretty well for the next day if you have enough self-control (I donāt)
The doughnut was Ā£5 and by far the most expensive doughnut Iāve bought in Leeds - and weāve tried a lot of them! Sadly, the price just isnāt justified for the doughnut. But perhaps we are in the minority as this was the last one on the shelf so clearly the rest of Leeds disagrees with us! The dough was fine, the filling was quite sickly but then again, lotus biscoff is quite a sickly flavour. If Iād paid Ā£2 for this doughnut I wouldnāt have been disappointed but Ā£5 is extortionate in my opinion! We were quite slow to be served, but they were quite busy with other orders so we didnāt mind waiting.
Weāll continue to visit, and Iām dying to sit in the cafe and try a bagel. Iād also recommend going nice and early in the day so thereās plenty of choice. The car park is full of potholes and very small so just park around the corner where the fish and chip shop used to be and save...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI love the food, customer service and ambience at Street Lane Bakery. All the food baked there is fresh and high quality, and the coffee is delicious. The service is friendly and efficient, both in the shop/cafe and on the phone.
I discovered the cinnamon cake with icing on because there was a taster of it on the counter last week. Yesterday I bought a whole slice of it for my family, together with some chocolate drizzle flapjack, and both went down a treat. My vegan sister was particularly delighted. In fact, it turns out that many items for sale in the bakery are vegan. Thatās great if you happen to be vegan. For those that arenāt, youād actually never know from the look or taste of any of the delights on sale there that they are vegan.
In the cafe last week I had a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel for lunch. It was really tasty and filling.
The breads look fabulous too. Iām saving that treat for next time I go. They are also freshly made and donāt have the additives in of mass-produced bread.
Iām so pleased to have this bakery quite close to home. Highly...
