Food pretty good, sadly got scammed by one of the barmaids when I asked for two glasses of white wine - got offered a choice of something she wasn’t capable of pronouncing (says a lot), Sauvignon or Chardonnay so I picked Sauvignon which is a fairly standard wine stocked by most bars. She poured the glasses, made sure she keyed the details into the till out of sight and waved the contactless receiver at me which I just tapped without thinking much about it. Gobsmacked when I realised it was £25 for two glasses of wine!!! I totally get that I was a bit daft to tap without asking but you get into the habit of it and have a rough expectation of what wine costs. I have to say that any other bar I’ve ever been into, if the wine had been that expensive the server would have double checked that I was happy before pouring it, let alone charging for it. It was the smirk when I queried the price that did it for me and proved she knew exactly what she was doing. I guess competent bar staff are hard to come by these days so bars have to take on whatever they can 🤷♂️. Am unlikely to be going back to Northern Market any time soon which is a shame as I used to regularly take groups of 20 or 30 there when it was Assembly Underground - plenty of other bars with more...
Read moreThe main entrance to Northern Market is a steep, narrow flight of steps, so wheelchair access is via a back entrance and a platform lift. When the door isn't locked, furniture is packed so tightly into the area outside the lift it's impossible to get through. Most of the wheelchair-friendly tables have been placed in a section up two steps. Counters for purchasing food are at an unreasonable height for wheelchair access. Upon attending the work Christmas party, they decided to block the area with kegs despite my colleagues saying not to. People had to haul kegs out of the way so I could get in. I asked about access issues and simply got offered free stuff, and the access issues weren't addressed (even when raising the issues while inside the building, they didn't fix move the kegs or unblock the lift). I couldn't reach the accessible bathroom due to the kegs, and just hope they're not using it for storage. Assembly Underground used to be one of my favourite accessible spaces in Leeds, and they've managed to make it completely inaccessible. Food is...
Read moreThe Northern Market is a great place to have a beer and a meal in the heart of Leeds! With its selection of four different food vendors (Falafel Guys, Big Buns, Six Slice, & The Lucky Snake). While I'm not vegan, there are vegan options at each vendor so that everyone in your party could enjoy which I think is great. My partner and I had burgers and chips from Big Buns and they were quite delicious. I'm looking forward to trying the other vendors as well.
The space is quite large as well with some seating areas hidden away from the larger, open front area. I also enjoyed how relaxed the place felt even though there was a healthy amount of people in there having a good time.
We also had a small selection of various beers from Northern Monk which were great; I'm particularly fond of their hazy IPA, Heathen.
The only place I have to dock points was that the bar service was a bit slow even though there weren't many customers waiting to order beer. Otherwise, fantastic place that I'd definitely be...
