The pub is nice, but avoid all of the ticketed events.
We paid £30 for 2 tickets to the burger event a couple of months ago, arrived about an hour after the start, to find:
No free drinks with our tickets. We had to pay £10 for 10 tokens, when every burger was 11 tokens, and most beers were 6, which is really annoying when you can only buy in multiples of 10. No smaller portions, just burgers for £11. No one was on the door checking tickets, so other people just walked in for free. We got a little glass, but I'm not sure where the rest of the £15 went.
Cocktail bar was closed and looked like it was never open
The toilets are really bad. They're dirty and are never cleaned over the course of an event.
Events run 7pm - 10pm, but all food closes promptly at 9pm.
A 'battle of the burgers' requires more than 2 stalls. Especially when one of them is Byron.
1 staff member rushing off their feet, serving 30 people. When I ordered a pint on the bar, I was told it was 6 tokens, when the tap itself said 4. This caused a bit of an argument, but eventually she 'negotiated' to 5.
When I emailed Black Lodge about this I got a bit of a snippy email, without any acknowledgement of any wrong doing or points of learning.
There's a lot of good competition nearby, and if they improve in the future I'll gladly change my star rating, but right now they are a firm 1.
Edit later
So after the snippy response from the owner below, I've gone back and double checked some things. Usually I can't be bothered with this kind of thing, but I'm not having a fake response go unchallenged.
Fair enough, I actually paid £11.10 per ticket, but these still weren't checked and didn't provide anything for it.
The beer tokens were 100% only available in £10 bunches, despite what you say, and everything was priced in 6 tokens or 14, so basically you're guaranteed to be wasting money. The event was not 'very busy' it had been pissing down with rain for hours and had at best 50 people there. Regardless of food issues, having Byron burgers at a food festival type thing is a bit of a joke.
I think it's a real shame they can't learn from perfectly legitimate criticism here. For reference, I have been back. The venue in the summer is great, has a good vibe and good drink options. The cocktail areas aren't great and the loo's leave a lot to be desired, but the owner could have very easily come back and said 'sorry it wasn't right, all the best for the future etc.'
This venue is actually good, just the events (in my experience weren't well managed), and the owner below seems to be a...
Read moreIgnore the ramblings of Mr Gait, The black lodge is a great addition to the Beer scene in Liverpool City centre, and with the end of brewing at the Baltic fleet it is the only brew pub/bar in Liverpool currently.
Twin peaks fans may get the nod to the series with the name but inside there are no unusual occurrences. Just great beer in simple surroundings. The offerings are mostly Keg beers from the breweries own equipment (which you can see right next to the bar). The other beers come from other regional and national breweries there is also a small but well chosen bottle selection.
If your feeling hungry the Charcuterie is a sight to behold. and the Scotch eggs are pretty damn fine!
While the black lodge may be somewhat out of the way it can be easily visited as part of a ramble around the Baltic triangle area, it is also one of the later opening beer venues in town so a worth last stop to end your evening. So...
Read moreSmall seating area inside, good music, heating for chillier days. Street food is sometimes available. Lots of kegs, mainly IPAs and sours if that's your thing. Decent takeout can and merch selection. Really nice staff, good adherence to Covid guidelines. Large-ish outdoor seating area and there isn't on-site parking but there is a pay-by-the-hour car park a very short walk away. It's OK, I just wasn't that impressed with the lack of variety beer-wise. I used to go to their old location near Jamaica Street, which I loved, and it just doesn't seem to have the same vibe. It's still pretty popular though so each...
