A legendary pit stop for a last pint before the train leaves. Very handy for the theatre too. Used to be Nellie and Bertâs pub, both epic characters. We used to arrive on a Saturday for the football. Weâd get there at quarter to eleven, it didnât open till 11, but if you banged on the window the cleaner would let you in. âBoys, do you want a pint while we wait to open?â
The pub used to be packed out after hours midweek, full of policemen. Easily the safest pub in Liverpool. The policemen were supposed to be pounding the streets. But they were in the pub. Their sergeant knew what was going on, so he introduced a quota of arrests per night. It was decided that a typical number of arrests per night would be 5.
Well the Bizzies didnât want to miss their drink because of the quota.

Built in 1846, with a storied history, surrounded by newer buildings, the pub has a feeling of resilience.
We hear the term 'proper pub' a lot. It usually refers to traditional furnishings, original fixtures and fittings, period features, Ma Edgerton's has all that. Wooden interior, stained glass, high-ceilings.
If you're 20 and want loud electronic music, then it's probably not for you. It still has a good atmosphere and an energy. It was buzzing when we last visited.

Hadent seen them for nearly 5 years so decided to go through to meet them now I live back down here. I thought you carnt come to Liverpool and leave without having a bowl of the trational Scouse. The four of us enjoyed it, beautifulđđđđNicely served on a board with toasted bread, butter and red cabbage. A bowl full which was very filling. The staff were very nice.
