Penny Lane isn’t just a street—it’s a Beatles-powered time machine dressed up as a perfectly ordinary Liverpool road. But trust me, once you’re there, it’s anything but ordinary.
You’ll find yourself humming “Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes” within 30 seconds of arrival. And yes, the famous sign is still the most-photographed wall ornament in Merseyside—ideal for your next Instagram moment or spontaneous album cover shoot.
Walk along and the lyrics come to life. “The barber shaves another customer”—yep, there’s still a barber shop. Whether he remembers the 60s or not is anyone’s guess, but he’s definitely riding the wave. You half-expect a banker in a motorcar to drive past, “the little children laughing behind his back.”
There’s also a fab café nearby where you can sip coffee and pretend you’re in the next Beatles biopic. If you’re lucky, you might catch a bus “shelter in the middle of the roundabout,” although traffic planning has modernized slightly since 1967.

Read moreIn all my time eating out and discovering new places I decided to try the newly renovated and refurbished Penny Lane 🍷 Bar. My infant years were brought up off Penny Lane and I'd forgotten all about it. With its young and talented new appointed head chef and owners they have done an amazing job. Something that the owners need to address and work on or business will be lost. I wish all the staff at the wine bar great success. Can't wait to return for Sunday lunch which is amazing, the best roast I've ever had everrr and the daily menu's are educating and refreshing to see. Well...

Had a nice chat with the lad behind the bar then took our seats by the fireplace, all ok, nice and chilled, everyone happy. Some time later a group come in and sit next to us wanting to watch the rugby, so the TV next to our heads gets switched on full volume. A polite request to the manager to turn it down slightly was met with a rude “sit somewhere else”… there was no consideration of the fact we had been there for some time and were spending money in her bar. There was no compromise to turn it down until the match started, it was a straight no and that we should move. Really disappointing from a bar we’ve always enjoyed. Will think twice before going back again, the Dovey is...
