My partner and I journeyed across the capital to sample what some have described as “the finest Japanese sushi in London.” Somewhat expecting disappointment given the hype, we instead left with the gratifying sense that we had uncovered a genuine hidden gem - one that more than justified its exalted reputation.
During our visit, we indulged in a selection comprising the nigiri set, the zeitaku don, and a negitoro temaki hand roll on the side. Whilst the fish was of commendable quality, it was the rice that left the most indelible impression on us both. Each grain was perfectly al dente in texture yet glutinous as a collective. Imbued with an exquisite balance of vinegar, gentle sweetness, and a deep, savoury umami, it served as a quiet reminder that great sushi is as much about the fish as it is dependent on the rice.
For visitors from afar, it is worth noting that Hase-Ya operates as a takeaway rather than a dine-in establishment. Fortunately, Lammas Park lies only a short 5-minute walk away and - weather permitting - offers a verdant setting for an impromptu picnic. (Do, of course, remember to tidy up afterwards so others may enjoy it as much as you did!)
In conclusion, we would readily recommend Hase-Ya to anyone with even the faintest inclination towards the refined pleasures of Japanese sushi and sashimi. It is a place that honours tradition, rewards curiosity and - in its quiet, unassuming way - reminds us all that excellence often hides in the most modest...
Read moreMy partner and I recently visited Hase-Ya and left feeling genuinely impressed. It’s one of those hidden gems that truly lives up to its reputation.
During our visit, we tried a few dishes: the nigiri set, the zeitaku don, and a negitoro temaki hand roll. While the fish was of good quality, what stood out most was the rice. Each grain was perfectly cooked—dente yet sticky—with a delicate balance of vinegar, subtle sweetness, and rich umami. It reminded us that great sushi is as much about the rice as the fish.
A quick note for travelers: Hase-Ya operates as a takeaway spot, not a sit-down restaurant. Luckily, Lammas Park is just a five-minute walk away and makes a lovely spot for a picnic—weather permitting. Just remember to clean up afterwards so everyone can enjoy the space. All in all, we’d happily recommend Hase-Ya to anyone interested in authentic Japanese sushi and sashimi. It’s a simple place that respects tradition, rewards curiosity, and shows us that excellence often hides in the most...
Read moreI dropped in on the off chance just before closing after my wife mentioned seeing a queue outside. Very friendly and efficient service with a smile. This is simply the best sushi and sashimi I have had in London for a long time. The Churoto sashimi was delightful and melted in the mouth. The marinated mackerel sushi was one of the best sushi dishes I have tasted, with just a little sweetness from the seaweed wrapped on top - Kerpow! For the quality and freshness of the fish and the deft preparation, the food is also excellent value for money. And even better it’s just round the corner....
