A powerhouse of a restaurant hidden by a very modest shop front and interior, a warm greeting met us when we walked in, this is a very serious place to visit if you enjoy your food, the array of freshly cooked meat and poultry is a wonder to behold, not to mention the fish cooked to order, I was there to savour the best of Jewish cuisine with my friend from the suburbs courtesy of a fortuitous win on a win on a raffle night for a deserving and overlooked charity, our meal was a prize donated by the owners who generously offered the Meal to help raise funds for the charity, we pre-booked our table for 1pm but turned up early and were allowed to choose our table, the service was excellent and discreet, the waitress I think was the daughter of the owners since I believe this is a family run restaurant, the best kind of restaurant you can hope for, I can only commend her quiet attentiveness, we started with chopped liver with egg and onion, served with matzo, a meal in itself, the best chopped liver I have tasted and the eggs were diced and freshly cooked, our main course after much deliberation since there was so much to choose from settled on a plate of Salt Beef and Tongue each, almost a mistake as the portions were so generous that we could have shared just one, but with meat that well cooked and so tender, why on earth would you want to share it, we shared a bowl of continental salad, light and refreshing with a very delicate dressing, served within the bowl in two lettuce leaves, a thoughtful and refreshing presentation of a something that was not treated as a mere salad, we finished on the dessert, the homemade Apple Strudel was a must served with a scoop of ice cream, we were already full to the brim with the Meal so far but desserts like this are few and far between to stumble across, the Strudel was gorgeous, lovely pastry, expertly cooked apple and a good accompanied amount of dried fruit all lightly spiced, the ice cream was I think a Cornish dairy, rich and creamy to compliment the Strudel, as far as drink went, we settled from the moment we sat down to go for the Lemon Tea, served in a glass cup as you would expect with a generous amount of Lemon slices, I observed during our meal that this restaurant was extremely popular with the locals but we were the only visitors, quite understandably since why would you tell everyone about a place this good, I am planning another trip as soon as possible since I have found the hidden gem which is not for once the cliché of used...
Read moreOrdered chopped liver. It didn’t look like chopped liver, it didn’t smell like chopped liver, it didn’t have the texture of chopped liver, and it tasted nothing like chopped liver. I would be surprised if it had even been in the same room as chopped liver. No idea what it was, but it had the colour, and consistency of cat food. Won’t be going back.
Dear owner, I note your response and I have updated my original review accordingly. I can assure you that I did, in fact, order chopped liver from your establishment on Wednesday 19th of March 2025, and my review reflects my genuine experience. I appreciate that you sell a large volume of chopped liver weekly and that most customers may indeed be satisfied. I have eaten chopped liver many, many times over the years, at many different establishments and homes and it wasn't so much that yours was a bad chopped liver, it was that what I received bore no resemblance to chopped liver in appearance, texture, smell, consistancy or taste. If I had to guess, it was leftover cooked chopped meats in some sort of a sauce, it was not firm like chopped liver should be, it spread out over the lettuce it was served on. It was extremely disappointing, which is why I felt compelled to share my feedback.
I understand it's frustrating to receive negative reviews, but dismissing my experience as if I was never a customer comes across as defensive rather than constructive. I'm not "hiding" behind anything, my profile is there to be seen and if you had bothered to look you would have noted that I was neither a young man or lady, but a mature man, a man who has eaten chopped liver of varying qualities over many, many years and I know when chopped liver simply is not chopped liver. I was a paying customer who received something that did not meet expectations. I should have mentioned it on the night, but frankly I was embarrassed both for the business associate I had brought with me, and for you.
I hope you can take this feedback in the spirit intended and going forward ensure that what you are serving as chopped liver is...
Read moreFantastic Salt Beef sandwiches.
If you're searching for a traditional salt beef sandwich, on proper Rye bread, with all the trimmings like mustard and pickled cucumber, this is the only place to go.
Once, inside at the counter, you'll be astonished by the huge, generous layers of succulent, dark-red, salt beef, (corned beef if you're from the USA), perfectly cooked daily in their own kitchen, or deliciously soft beef tongue, accompanied by some of the best hand cut chips I have ever tasted, or one of their delicious potato latkes.
I can't speak too highly of this little gem of a restaurant. It's not kosher but it's in the "Old Fashioned Kosher Style" like Blooms was if you know what I mean!
They also do great chopped liver, chopped fried fish balls and chopped boiled as well as chicken soup with kneidlach, lokshen or bean and barley to eat in or takeaway.
Not a big selection of desserts, but the Apple Strudel is always good and there's delicious lokshen pudding.
Treat yourself to a sandwich. You won't be disappointed. This is a solid 4 stars maybe just under a 5! If you start going on a regular basis you'll soon be on first name terms with the proprietor.
Closes around 8.30 and...
