Visited Chook Chook for a pre-booked celebratory dinner and was underwhelmed by the whole experience.
The service was slow and the waiters not very attentive. When we were being served, everything was very rushed and I felt table turnaround was taking priority over service.
I've been to other establishments where the service isn't great but the food is so good, you don't care. Chook chook is unfortunately not like that. From everything I tried, most things tasted average and didn't have a particular wow factor. Quick overview of the items I tried below:
We ordered: Lamb chops (3/5 - Great seasoning but unfortunately overcooked) Samosa Chaat (4/5) Dahi Bhalla Basket (4/5) Amritsari Fish (2/5 - Lacking in both flavour and substance) Chilli Chicken (2/5 - very overcooked) Butter Paneer (not something I'd usually order so it wouldn't be fair to comment) Dal Makhni (3/5 - Average at best) Garlic Naan (5/5 - Perfect Naan, taste, texture and crisp) Chicken Biryani (4/5 - Not the best, but well seasoned with generous chunks of chicken) Pistachio Kulfi (5/5) Chocolate fondant (3/5 - Centre of the cake wasn't a liquid, as you'd typically expect)
I'm also not convinced about the "freshness" of the food as other reviews have mentioned. The food we initially received was wrong due to a new waiter's error, which with all due respect the restaurant handled well. The replacement meal however turned up in under 5 minutes. Considering this was an ordering issue and not a table mixup, I was genuinely surprised.
All in all, I wouldn't rush to Chook Chook for a dine in experience or mind blowing indian cuisine. However, if you have a craving it will do the job. My expectations on this occasion may have...

Chook Chook is an absolute hidden gem tucked away in Richmond that deserves far more attention than it gets. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed like old friends – the staff are warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about making sure you have a great experience. The owner personally checked in with us during our meal, which made it feel even more special and showed how much they care about every guest.
The food is simply fantastic – authentic, fresh, and bursting with flavour. One thing I really appreciated was that I was able to customise the dishes exactly to my liking, both in spice level and accompaniments, and nothing was too much trouble. The portions were generous as well, so you really feel you’re getting amazing value for money. From the rich, perfectly balanced curries to the soft, fluffy naan and flavour-packed starters, every bite was a delight.
The location is brilliant too – just off the main high street in Richmond, easy to get to and with plenty of parking nearby, which is such a bonus in this area. The restaurant has a cosy, welcoming vibe with a stylish yet traditional décor that’s ideal for date nights, family dinners, or just a relaxed evening out.
It’s no wonder Chook Chook boasts a Google rating over 4.5 stars from hundreds of happy diners. People consistently praise the friendly service, generous portions, excellent value, and top-quality food – and I can now see why.

Had an amazing meal at Chook Chook: Indian Railway Kitchen in Putney! From the moment we arrived, Sahil took the time to explain the menu and offer recommendations, making the experience even more special.
We kicked off with Amritsari Tikki Chole, a deliciously crisp potato cutlet paired with tangy, spiced chickpeas, drizzled with yoghurt and chutneys—a proper North Indian street food classic!
The Garlic & Chilli Prawns were another winner—crispy, packed with heat, and tossed with vibrant peppers.
The Spicy Keema Pav delivered on its promise—flavoursome lamb mince with buttery buns that just soaked it all up beautifully. But the Awadhi Lamb Chops stole the show. Marinated in ginger, garlic, yoghurt, green chillies, and coriander before being cooked to perfection in a clay oven—this is a must-order!
We also had the House Black Daal, a slow-cooked lentil dish that was rich and comforting, and the Railway Chicken Curry, a rustic, homely dish that transported us straight to the colonial-era Indian railways.
The Lamb Biryani was fragrant, flavour-packed, and had the perfect spicy kick.
For dessert, the Gulab Jamun was a hit—warm, syrupy, and indulgent. However, the Coconut Kheer lacked the coconut punch I was expecting. Everything was washed down with a refreshing Mango Lassi, the perfect way to round off the meal.
Big shoutout to Ketan and Sam for their warm and attentive service! If you’re in Putney, make sure to check...
