A below par dining experience! Given the high prices, I was expecting a slick, well executed meal. The restaurant wasn't at full capacity, the staff to diner ratio was higher than you'd expect, therefore I'd think this would deliver a 5 star service. The A/C was up too high, making the place cold, the music was so loud, it made conversation hard.
We ordered a selection of small plates, of which some come at £16. Given that the menu is relative short, you'd think that the staff would know all the dishes like the back of their hand.
We had the squid dish, it arrived with a top covering of a dozen or so mussels, with the squid not being viable. When the server was asked if it was the correct dish as ordered, he picked the dish up and marched back to the kitchen to ask, returning with the knowledge that the squid are underneath, after he had pushed and poked the mussel shells around, if you're charging £16 for a small dish, the staff should be fully conversant of every dish on the menu. The disappointment was compounded by the fact that the dish had only four, tiny baby stuffed, rather tough, chewy squid, washing around in a watery green sauce.
Additionally the same server brought the bread we ordered to the table, as there were three of us, he gave us 5 small/half slices of bread, we asked for an extra piece, this is not an expensive item, so why not offer a larger plate.
The side dish of potato was tasty by small for the price, the courgette dish were expensive, cold and lacking in flavour.
At no point did a member of staff come over and ask if everything was ok. Still we paid the service charge added to the bill.
Come on guys, you proudly display a michelin plague, therefore...
Read moreThis has to be one of the worst meals I have endured in London and certainly the most disappointing.
When I was here (weekday dinner)the clientele was largely after work office groups. We had a table with huge windows overlooking the very busy City Road, a Sainsburys Local and a Pret. The banquette seats added to the Aberdeen Steak House atmosphere.
Our food varied from adequate to inedible. The bread was poor in an area with dozens of fabulous artisan bakers. The oysters (to be fair out of season, but why serve them?)were just ok. The halibut ceviche with Monks’ Beard was ok (the only decent dish that we ate) but was rather bland, had plenty of fennel and next to no Monks’ Beard. The accompanying smoked Mascarpone redeemed the dish but the citrus bite that makes a ceviche special, was entirely absent. The Salted fried chicken with chili was heavy, greasy and (apart from the spice) tasteless. The tempura of soft shell crab was not a tempura at all and tasted identical to the chicken, just mushier. The chips were excellent.
The white wine we had was a Touraine Sauvignon that was unusually fat and sweet and could not stand up to any of the food. The Chilean Pinot Noir was ok but not particularly well chosen.
The service was friendly but incompetent. Food had to be requested several times and even then came wrong. The lady in charge was super friendly, saw that the meal was a disgrace and did reduce the bill slightly (we did not ask), so at least someone was trying.
I simply cannot understand the reviews this establishment receives. Perhaps it has collapsed very...
Read moreHad very high expectations coming to this restaurant namely due to the previous reviews & Corrigan's reputation for excellent food. Unfortunately, none of the dishes wowed & some were simply without flavour. The wine list was lacking any good wines (average rating of the bottles under £50 was 3.5 on trusted wine review websites). This is especially disappointing at this high price. Can't fault the staff, they were very attentive & accommodating. Just to call out a few of the major issues: One of the things that was recommended was the crispy chilli chicken - it was soggy and under seasoned, the meat tasted undercooked. The mayo it came with had been siting out for quite some time & gathered a film on top. The pigs cheeks however were great, but lacking any flavour of crab. The cocktails we had ordered first, came once all starters had been served which isn't ideal. The starters also were not served in the correct order, with cold oysters coming out last when this should be pre-warm starters. When we ordered wine, that came immediately before we had finished our cocktails. The main dish of pit pork was OK, but for the price point and compared to other restaurants underdelivered on flavour. The rhubarb custard tart was inedible - the rhubarb was tough and under cooked, the custard had no hint of a taste, the pastry dry, not buttery nor flaky, and the meringue tasted like cardboard. As I said, I really had high hopes but left very disappointing. The 2 stars go to the...
