I recently visited The Duke of York in London, and it turned out to be one of those pubs that really hits the mark—classic feel, solid food, and just enough polish to remind you you’re in the heart of the city.
From the outside, it’s got that stately, almost old-school London pub look, but inside it balances tradition with a modern twist. Polished wood, warm lighting, and a bit of buzz without being chaotic—it manages to feel both relaxed and refined.
I went in for dinner and was genuinely impressed. The menu is British at its core, but a bit elevated—think pub favourites done with care rather than just standard pub grub. I had the fish and chips, and they were spot on: crispy batter, flaky fish, and proper chunky chips. It came with mushy peas and tartare sauce that didn’t feel like an afterthought.
They had a good drinks selection too—some local ales on tap, a few craft beers, and a wine list that’s actually worth looking at. I went with a pint of pale ale and it paired nicely with the food. You could tell they care about quality across the board.
Service was friendly, with that mix of attentiveness and giving you space. No rush, no fuss—just genuinely good hospitality.
The crowd was a mix—locals, office workers, a few tourists who’d clearly stumbled on a good find. It’s the kind of place you could happily take visiting family or grab a post-work drink without needing a special reason.
All in all, The Duke of York is a proper London pub—with a little extra class. Great location, great food, and a warm, unpretentious vibe. I’ll...
Read moreMe and my partner had seen this pub on the way to catching a bus to go into Westminster to visit different tourist sites and thought that the menu looked quite good and pretty fair pricing for quite central london.
So after a long hard day, going round the different sites and getting to the pub at about 8 PM we placed our order thru the table side QR code as no cash or card payment at the bar is accepted.
The atmosphere was warm and friendly from the customers and the food was tasty.
However, unfortunately there was a VERY RUDE male staff member who clearly hates his job.
As the food took 30 minutes to come and he only brought the sides to the table. I reasonably asked how long the mains would be. And he aggresively said "I haven't got 4 hands! What do you want me to do? I'm bringing the mains next!"
This put a real downer on what otherwise could have been a good experience and if I could have seen a manager, I would have talked to them directly as this is unacceptable behaviour to use with a customer.
Nice pub, but the rude waiter needs retraining or to be given a warning.
Edit: Don't appreciate being passive agressively called a liar by the "owner". We were clearly told by one of the waiting team that it was payment through the QR code on the table only and the staff member who served us was clearly not joking.
Next time, try and actually accept and address learning opportunites rather than call customers liars. Check my other reviews all around the world, I always give TRUTHFUL and...
Read moreUnfortunately I ordered the vegetarian meal, The New Yorker, and the meat version was given to me, which as a vegetarian for years is quite upsetting. We didn’t release the mistake until the vegetarian version came out. I had already eaten the burger. We approached the bar staff to explain what had happened and they offered no apology. Not even a sorry. I think having similar dishes that are called The New York Deli and the New Yorker, that are meat and veggie respectively, is not ideal especially when the staff don’t make it clear which one they are serving. My wife clarified ‘The New Yorker?’ before it being put down and was told ‘yes’. I am lucky I’m not allergic or this could have been 100 times worse. I would avoid this overpriced pub and won’t...
