Generally tasty food including desserts in a clean setting. Background music can add to the atmosphere. Such people like Vaselica ( also known as Lilly!) with no customer skills don't belong in the Hospitality business! A friend whom I meet regularly for lunch suggested that we visit Frankie and Benny’s restaurant in Wembley for a meal. I always do my homework before I eat at a restaurant for the first time. First – the council’s hygiene rating; no problems on that score as they got a ‘5’ – the best there is. Then I looked at the Google reviews – a mixed bag; some gave full marks, others complained that the food must have been microwaved as it arrived almost instantly; that their whole family went down with food poisoning after eating there; that the staff were ‘blunt’ and that they had the ‘worst pizza ever’ there. However, the average score was 4.4/5 and that was good enough for me.

I always look for three things in restaurants: a warm welcome and friendly staff; clean and pleasant surroundings and finally, of course, good food.

We were greeted with a smile immediately we entered, from a charming young woman. I was a bit put out by the loud beat music so when she returned to take our drinks orders, I mentioned this to her. Within seconds, it had been turned down. She took our orders – and I could not imagine a more relaxed and friendly waitress.

Surroundings? Superb. The restaurant is huge, ‘classy’ and spotlessly clean. The location too was amazing. It’s in the area around Wembley stadium. When I last went there, about 30 years ago, it was a criss-cross of shabby roads, derelict buildings and dodgy people hanging around – I believe it was a high-crime area. It is now fully developed as a shopping centre with multiple blocks of flats – but that doesn’t do it full justice. When you enter it from Wembley Park Station, you are in a different world. The design is amazing; wide boulevards with people strolling around; no traffic; no noise; peaceful, colourful and visually arresting. It’s like a work of art.

Finally – the food. I started with the Spicy Potato Skins and followed with a Pasta Arrabbiata. Was it heated in a microwave? Who cares – it could have been heated on a Guy Fawkes bonfire or a builder’s blowlamp. Whatever the case, both courses were absolutely delicious. It wasn’t a Match Day at Wembley so the restaurant and surroundings were not heaving with noisy crowds.

Food poisoning? It’s now three days later and neither my friend nor I suffered any ill-effects. I shall certainly be returning – though again, not on a Match Day. Highly...

We took our kids to watch a movie at the cinema and afterwards decided to have a meal at Frankie & Benny’s in Wembley. When we arrived, the lady who greeted us was kind and directed us to sit on the right-hand side, which was suitable for us as we had children with us. We were given menus and waited for my husband, who had gone to check on parking since it was an event day with a different tariff.

Once he joined us, we looked through the menu and my husband asked a staff member whether our Blue Light discount could be applied. Unfortunately, her response was quite blunt. My husband asked politely if the discount wasn’t valid because of it being an event day, but she abruptly replied “NO” and then came back towards us in a confrontational manner, asking, “Who told you guys to sit there?”

This left us feeling very uncomfortable, especially as we had clearly been seated there by another staff member. The way we were spoken to felt unnecessary and unfair. Sadly, we couldn’t help but feel that my husband’s appearance – with his big beard – played a role in how we were treated. It’s hard not to think that if we looked different, the situation may have been handled more respectfully.

We raised our concerns with the manager and then decided to leave. Our children were disappointed as they had been looking forward to eating there, but we didn’t feel comfortable staying or spending our hard-earned money in an environment where we didn’t feel welcomed.
