Quite disappointed overall. I booked for my partner’s birthday and unfortunately, the table wasn’t ready when we arrived. Nothing special was done for the birthday either, which makes me wonder why they even ask about special occasions if nothing comes of it.
We first discovered Hacha through Nopalito (which we really like) and were disappointed to see it wasn’t the same team in the kitchen. It seems they are covering in Bermondsey but not Dalston.
The menu is very limited — which can be a good sign — but the drinks we wanted weren’t available. We tried the Taco Tuesday “unlimited tacos for an hour,” but there were so many restrictions that it didn’t feel like real unlimited tacos. One of them, the best, not available for the promotion. Also, tacos came with tomato (which I don’t eat and I just wasn’t expecting it as first time in a supposed traditional Mexican restaurant I see that). While I was waiting for new tacos without tomato, I wasn’t allowed to order more for myself in the meantime. This meant my partner and I ended up eating at different times, with no consideration from the staff about the situation. Lots of beans in the tacos also and little meat, like the beans is a filler as it's cheap.
The food itself was ok, but not amazing (and not really approved by a Mexican). Service also felt unbalanced: too many staff members for such a small place, yet the service still wasn’t great — until the end, when one good waiter partly saved the experience.
On the positive side, the restaurant itself is very nice: cosy, modern, and with a good atmosphere. But overall, it didn’t live up to our expectations, especially for a...
Read moreWe went as part of London Cocktail Week. Their first themed cocktail was a "Jalisco Daisy" containing tequila, sour mix, salted banana, aquavit and foaming bitters. It was pleasant and well-balanced, with a gentle banana flavour. Food-wise we had guac and chips followed by some tacos, all of which were fine but nothing out of the ordinary. We then tried the Mezcal Mirror Margarita, which was a serious disappointment. Perhaps I am a traditionalist, but this bore no resemblance to a margarita and in my view is not a successful drink. When I mentioned that the drink had almost no flavour the bar remade it, but it was still virtually tasteless. The first problem is that it omits the lime and triple sec that are present in a standard margarita, thereby omitting the citrus and most of the sourness. The result is very, very bland. The second problem is that it is served with a lot of small ice cubes, so it quickly becomes extremely watery and even more tasteless. This could be solved by either serving without ice (like a traditional margarita) or by serving with one large ice cube (like an Old Fashioned). The third and far more minor problem is the lack of a salt rim. If you enjoy a traditional margarita, whether with tequila or mezcal, then I would strongly recommend staying away from the versions here. However, if you hate citrus and but love vodka and soda then I imagine...
