I recently dined at this restaurant, and while the food was excellent, several aspects of the experience left me disappointed.

Firstly, I was disappointed by the hostess’s attitude. Despite available outdoor tables, we were not given the option to sit outside, and she seemed to penalize us for booking on the same day. This was quite off-putting.

The pricing for the ribeye steaks also left me perplexed. Offering two 250g steaks for £68 and a single 500g steak for only £1 more didn’t make much sense from a value perspective.

On the positive side, the service was efficient, but the ambiance left much to be desired. There was no music, and the decor felt plain and sad.

Another drawback was the limited dessert menu, with only three options. Moreover, the absence of decaf coffee was surprising, as they could only offer instant decaf.

Despite the great quality and presentation of the food, these negatives overshadowed the experience. I’m left with the impression that I probably won’t return to this restaurant...

I love this place! My family and I ate there 3-4 times while on holiday in London. We tried the ribeye, burger, corn ribs, malva pudding - everything was delicious. I was touched by the warm hospitality too. The owner genuinely cares about her customers and each time we visited High Timber, she made a sincere effort to make sure our meal was special. Once in particular she kindly accommodated us at great inconvenience to her team. We will never forget our experiences at High Timber! When in London we will definitely make a point to return. I recommend you try this place for delicious South African cuisine, excellent wine, and friendly...

Rib-eye was cooked well and tasty, nothing really to complain about. Nearly a fiver for any kind of sauce (e.g. a tiny knob of garlic butter) is dismal value; best steer clear of those, which is a shame.

Duck terrine to start was again competent, but nothing outstanding - obviously going for gamey, but was actually rather lacking in flavour and seasoning. It was also served on a slightly-chipped ceramic bath tile, which I found a little odd.

Dessert of orange trifle wasn't a trifle, more a small, neat but over-set flavourless jelly with some meringue dust on the side. Deeply unimpressed with that.

On the plus side, service...

A lovely meal at High Timer where the food is excellent. Personally I had the cod which was very tasty but most in our party had steak which I was told was delicious. We dined outside on a glorious summers evening and watched the full moon pass the Shard. Starters was smoked salmon and the desert was a superb malva pudding. There is a wide choice of food to suit your taste but if you prefer the taste of South Africa you will not be disappointed. The wine cellar has a large selection of wines and the ambience of the restaurant is subtle African. A very nice night out in the heart of the city with superb views along the Thames.

I wish there is an option to give 10 stars here! High Timber is one of those rare places that gets everything just right. The food was absolutely delicious – every dish felt thoughtfully crafted and full of flavour. The wine list was amazing, especially knowing it’s from their own South African vineyard – I loved the personal touch. The service was warm and attentive without ever feeling overbearing, and the riverside views made the whole evening feel extra special. It’s the kind of spot you leave already planning your next visit. Shout out to Lucas for the wonderful service!
