Read moreI made a purposeful, nearly twenty minute, walk to visit Jumo, excited for its charm and what I thought would be a great hour of coffee, sketching ideas and enjoying my final morning in London. Instead, upon entering, I was greeted by a reticent look by the gentleman behind the register that triggered an unpleasant experience might be about to begin. I responded with politeness and ordered an Americano and went to sit amongst three open two tops. He quickly came over and requested I move so four people might be able to sit together… in the cafe that was more than half empty. I complied without argument. Taking a sip from my Americano, I settled in and took out my 10.5” iPad to blissfully fall into my imagination and sketch ideas when he immediately came over a second time. “No laptops on the weekends,” he announced with faint glee in his smile. I reminded him it wasn’t a laptop and noticed large phones atop every occupied table. He replied, “We don’t have space to write every type of device we prohibit on the sign.” Yet, there was plenty of space to say “laptops or tablets” but it didn’t. His actions and demeanor felt unequivocally directed to harass me, the singular black person, or person of color, in the cafe. He was successful. It was a dirty mud slap across my morning leading me to spend time drafting this instead of creating an incredible new character or wonder-filled world for my readers to explore. But maybe sharing this experience was his goal, so I’d spread the word. I finished my coffee and left, tucking in two blocks away at Montparnasse Cafe where a little girl played on her iPad with her mom & dad amongst an almost completely full set of tables while I filled two pages with great ideas on my own iPad. Their staff delivered nothing but warm smiles and...
Read moreCafe Jumo - Kensington Cafe Jumo in Kensington is a charming little spot with a fantastic location that definitely makes it worth a visit. Its prime position in the neighborhood is a huge plus and, in my opinion, justifies the slightly higher prices. It's a cute, tiny cafe with a cozy atmosphere that's perfect for a quick break or a catch-up. While we didn't try the food on this visit, they do have a selection of options available, which is great. However, I have to be honest about the coffee. I ordered a flat white and my partner had a cappuccino, and unfortunately, both were a bit disappointing. The milk consistency wasn't quite right for either drink—it felt a little thin—and the coffee itself was quite weak, lacking the robust flavor we were hoping for. Despite the coffee not hitting the mark for us, the overall experience was still positive thanks to the lovely location and the cafe's charming ambiance. It’s a great little hideaway, and if you're in the area, it's worth checking out for the location and atmosphere alone. I'd be willing to give the coffee another try on a different day, and maybe sample some of their...
