I first heard about Monmouth Coffee through the internet. Most "Best coffee in London" blogs/lists will have MC in their top 10 so it's well known. I first visited the Covent Garden premises and then discovered the shop in Borough having shopped at the market a few times. On around three occasions the queue to get in was too long so we (my father and I) gave it a miss (to our displeasure as we are big coffee lovers). We visited the market on a quiet Monday just after Christmas and saw there was no queue this time so we went in for a coffee. When you enter the shop you get the feel that this is a proper coffee shop. You have a host of barrister's working behind the counter, making coffee and serving beans to customers on the other side. We ordered two cappuccino's. The service was very good. It has an old school, traditional feel to it and you get the impression these guys are well trained in the art and care about what their making for their customers. The seating is old school and very relaxed. It has that "cool", "quirky" coffee culture feel to it but you have to also be prepared for that because you'll not always be guaranteed a seat. There are seats and tables but they are not your conventional arrangements. We managed to find a side bar which we were content with.
We thought the coffee was excellent. We will definitely be visiting again and next time braving the queue but in all honesty the service is quick so you probably won't be waiting long but as they say - good things come to those who wait and this coffee is worth...

So we went to this location after we went to the original one at Monmouth Street in Covent Garden area. One doesn’t simply go to Monmouth to have food, rather mainly for coffee. Queues were long, especially on weekends and peak touristy season.
The service was absolutely great, especially in the heavily crowded times one can’t really expect much more. There was a team member who kept coming to the people in queue and sharing their sustainable takeaway cup concept, and even took our order while we were waiting.
However, our cappuccino fell short of expectation, way milkier than imagined as you can see in the picture and we got it replaced by a Cortado which turned out to be perfect. My recommendation is to opt for a stronger drink if you are dining in, likely due to the size of their cups.
The Almond Croissant and Cheese twist we had were honestly both just meh and felt very hard to bite into as they were kept in open. Guessing this is because they don’t make these in house, rather get them from Little Bread Pedlar. I suggest staying away from these, although the financier looked worth trying. Personal preference and...
Read moreOverall, this coffee shop is a decent option for those looking for a good cup of coffee. The coffee itself tasted quite good and rich, which is always a plus. However, one downside they have is an absence of takeaway cups. They make you purchase £5 reusable cup if one wants their coffee for takeaway (you can always return it and get you money back). This might be a problem for those who want to take their coffee on the go, and it's definitely something that the shop should consider addressing.
Additionally, while the coffee was great, pastry was a bit dry and didn't seem to be very fresh. This might not be a problem for everyone, but it's worth noting.
On the plus side, the location is great. It's in a convenient spot that's easy to get to, which is always a plus.
Overall, I think this coffee shop is worth considering if you're in the area and looking for a good cup of coffee. Just be aware that they might not have takeaway cups available, and the pastries might not be the freshest. But if you're willing to overlook those issues, it's definitely...
