A lovely little local cafe that serves beautiful coffee and delicious banana bread. Unfortunately was enjoying coffee/cakes with family on Monday 8th Jan 24 and everyone in the cafe was asked to leave at 1.30 (busy lunchtime) so the barista/waiter could have his lunch break!!! We had paid for coffee and cakes like others but was all politely asked to leave....and it was snowing outside. Never happened to me before in all my years of dinning out!!! Still can't believe it.

  • Thanks for your reply Mouse Tail Coffee and the offer of a free coffee. Fortunately for local residents there are an abundance of coffee shops in the area who employ more than 1 member of staff and don't close up for lunch time so I'll decline your offer and pop to exmouth market where i will not have to get my children to rush eating with a 30 minute countdown. I was never after a free cup of coffee. Just wanted to make potential customers aware of the very unusual policy that you ask your customers to leave at lunchtime (like you said) with 30 mins, the 15 mins then a final 5 mins warning. I wish your business every success as you are...

Mouse Tail Coffee doesn’t just serve coffee—it serves character. Tucked away near Chancery Lane, this café blends artisanal brews with a laid-back charm that feels refreshingly unpolished. It’s the kind of place where the espresso stream is as fine as a mouse’s tail—and yes, that’s where the name comes from.

Atmosphere Compact, cozy, and quietly buzzing. The interior is minimal but inviting, with soft lighting and a few well-placed plants. It’s ideal for solo thinkers, quiet catch-ups, or a contemplative pause between meetings. Outdoor seating is available for those chasing sunlight or people-watching.

Food & Drink The menu is modest but thoughtful, with a focus on quality over quantity:

Flat white – smooth, balanced, and consistently praised by regulars

Matcha latte & chai – comforting, well-crafted, and not overly sweet

Banana bread – a local favourite: moist, fragrant, and perfect with coffee

Brownies & pastries – rich, indulgent, and ideal for a mid-afternoon lift

Most drinks are served in paper cups—even for dine-in—which adds a casual, grab-and-go feel, though some might miss the...

Good potential, good asthetic, but needs to be a bit more thought out.

I started to order an iced coffee, but they were out of cold brew and filter. Not a problem, not completely unexpected as it was the afternoon, so I started to order an iced latte.

But they have no syrups, not even simple syrup to sweeten it with. Not wanting to stir and stir to try and dissolve sugar granules in my cold coffee just to have it stay bitter, I ordered a chai instead- but they only had the smaller espresso lids when I got to the end of the counter, so I had to go lidless.

My Mrs got a matcha latte, and we left as we were sightseeing nearby. It had clumps of matcha powder in the bottom and was not stirred thuroughly. Nice shop, but needs more attention to supply...

Service of yesterday was bad. There were a lady with side short hair and a long tail in a chequered red shirt and a young inexperienced lad at the counter. They were keeping on gossiping about their business. We ordered and they didn't even bother to ask wether we were sitting or ordering to go. We intended to stay and obviously we were served paper cups. Food is more than average. Prices are not reasonable for what you are given. So not again thanks. P.s. I ordered a Latte and was given a Cappuccino. for £4 it can be slightly upsetting. Cheers!

TL;DR Coffee is fine, pastries look great, people can be friendlier. I had a long black yesterday as they didn't have a pullover. I wanted to ask of there was single source given curated coffee beans was a selling point at this place. However, the barista wasn't patient to answer additional questions. The long black wasn't't bad but nothing special either, especially for the price. Makes more sense if you were staying to enjoy the aesthetic/ vibe. But there are others just as nice cafes nearby where people are nicer.

Don’t buy whole beans from Mission Works and ask the barista to grind them for you in this place. I ocassionally buy coffee from here as a resident in the building they are in. I bought beans here today and asked the barista to grind them to use at home espresso machine. However, it is very fine so I can’t extract a single drop of coffee and leaving the puck with a muddy residue. When I came back another barista ignored the issue and dismissed me rather than offering a solution (i.e. a new batch).
