I used to love Pioca despite the very high prices, however I have experienced racism in coming here. My partner was asked to leave the store although they were in the queue to purchase some things for me. When I experienced this of course I was reluctant to go back as I saw it with my own eyes. The owner tried her best to solve this problem however, I was unable to provide a date and time of this situation and so nothing was resolved. The Owner did not ask me how I would like her to resolve the problem, I have a business background and my partner a law background but due to lack of interest in the customer I believe we could not come to an understanding. I have been treated "off" from time to time but have lover looked it as I love the family and have been visiting since the first week of opening but since they've hired new staff honestly I believe the quality of the whole experience has VASTLY decreased. Before spending £50 on a meal was justifiable because of the ambiance. Now I see it for what it is, over priced, sometimes you don't get what you want and the staff have definitely got a negative feeling to humans who have melanin in there DNA.
This hurts me to write this review but I would want to know this before I choose 1 where to eat 2 where I choose to share my energy 3 where I choose to spend my money.
I am aware that some people will enjoy this place more knowing that racism is apparent here, and to them I say.. its all yours. I'm thankful I don't have to share my energy with people who will judge me on something that cannot be changed and more than that an appearance. To others of colour. I advise you just don't go here because in all honesty if you love yourself since things have changed there is a high chance that you will feel high levels of uncomfortability and you will experience discrimination.
When I went in to talk about it - the manager ignored my complaint ( demonstrating more discrimination ) when I asked if we could go somewhere private she honestly looked me up and down looked at the small room, looked back at me and said no. Painful to when a part of. I was lucky the owner was in.
To the owner and family. I have seen you still have these staff members working there. You can't change a racist. I wish you the best in serving one...
Read moreMy friend and I came to this place once before when we were pleasantly surprised with food and the service. So this time around as we were in the area we decided to visit again. However, this time was a completely different experience. Our server was stoned and smelled of maríhuana and had difficulties taking our orders. Despite the disproving smell we didn't think much of it as we came for the food. We ordered our drinks and food. I ordered a coffee with milk on the side. The milk was off so I send it back. Granted I was given another coffee and a different type of milk but the coffee was literally like water. I have let it go as I didn't want to ruin the evening with my friend by sending the coffee back again. Our food came and it was decent. Towards the end when we received our bill, it had a service charge on. We asked the waiter to remove the service charge. He left and another person came back to our table and asked what was wrong with the bill. We said that we were not happy to pay the service charge. He asked why and what was wrong with the service. We said that service charge is optional and that speaking of service the milk I received with my coffee was off and was sent back. He said 'oh really?' My friend and I just looked at each other. While he walked away from our table he swore in a foreign language which we both understood. He used the B word. I'm being polite here he said a way more degrading word. We could hear him yelling in the back. He came back and asked us to pay and we asked to split the bill. He was not happy. So he went back and we heard him argue with another person, not sure if this was the manager or owner but it sure looked unprofessional at this point. We both felt uncomfortable and just being there at this point was extremely unpleasant. The person I assume is the manager/owner came to our table and apologised. We paid our bill each and while we were leaving the person kept apologising. My friend told her that it was an unpleasant experience and that the waiter made us feel uncomfortable. She asked which one, but at this point we just wanted to leave. Now that I think about it we should have just left in the first instance we smelled the server and noticed she was stoned. We were lucky to leave this place and we are never...
Read morePipoca is what Brixton was in need. A restaurant with a family feel away from the food courts around the area. I was there on Thursday night having this delicious Pesto crepe (never seen anything like it). I am not Vegan myself but went with friends since I really enjoy vegetarian food regardless. The ambience was absolutely great. Made me feel at a small town in the country side where the restaurant is next to a old fashioned grocery store.
What makes me sad is to see people or business that try unethically to destroy a restaurant's image and reputation. The Vegan community should consider these fake reviews such as Mr Aziz Salem and John S, which is clearly something arranged to damage Pipoca's reputation. The reviews are pretty similar and looks like they own a similar business. I bet those two have never been there!
I have been seeing reviews on vegan places and it makes cringe to know that Vegans can be very judgmental and somehow fundamentalists. It feels like one can not do anything that is all animal related, as one would be classified as a criminal.
I get the point of animal cruelty, but I am sure most of these people who are Vegans somehow impact on animals too. As an example: their place of work must have a seat with leather, the shoes the wear are made of leather, clothes, and so on.
I believe in constructive criticism but the way Vegans behave makes me think that I should never even bother going to any Vegan related venue as I could be exorcised or...
