What a disappointment! I ordered two mixed platters at £10 each and two Prawn Pad Thai. I’m really into high standards of authentic well cooked food. This grease filled Pad Thai for a main, and stodge-pastry-clad veg gyozas and spring rolls in the starter, (of which there was little in the way of ANY veg!), just gobby greasy pastry, definitely didn’t live up to even any average standard - absolutely appalling effort of cooking and absolutely unacceptable. These are hard times for everybody and if you want to stay in business, keep your standards or you’ll lose loyal customers. I’m a local in Hammersmith, am so not impressed with Poppy’s! Tried a jungle curry from there before Erich was ok but thought it was worth trying again. To add insult, they left out two of the six items that should’ve been there in both the mixed platters. We had ordered two platters and both were missing the same food items - Prawn Roll and Thai Prawn Crackers. When I called to complain, they said they don’t have any prawn rolls left and we’re substituting them for fish cakes. So i asked, well where’s the fish cakes sub then? To which she replied she didn’t know. And that the prawn crackers that were missing she said we don’t send those out for a takeaway delivery any more. So they think they can put this on the menu then not deliver, and ask the customer for £20 still for it - wow!! The arrogance!!! Cuz it ain’t cheap to buy a mixed platter at £10 each. And one expects a mixed platter of six items not four for that price. She said nothing they can do and sorry and put the phone down. Thankfully, ubereats were kind enough to refund me. We couldn’t eat the stodge except for the chicken satay on a stick in the starter and the six prawns in each of the dishes, other than that it all got thrown away, so the refund at least made up for the insulting food we were expected to eat. Awful standard, never again. I’m really getting very disappointed in the amount of restaurants post-lockdown, who think they can use the pandemic as a reason/excuse for their dummed down sub standard food and services which they’re over pricing! I accept deliveries of food may not be around as much and in the aftermath there’s a chaos going on, and certain prices MAY go up and yet, how come, other business be it in the food or other industries, and particularly small businesses, are making it happen and giving high standards of food and service and not necessarily charging through the nose ripping us all off. People notice these things ! The public ain’t stupid, we work hard as well, and we won’t accept shoddy standards unless a reasonable reason is given. Unacceptable standard of food at this restaurant and I won’t be ordering again from them, and just to be clear, I don’t recommend ! FYI. The best pad thai, and indeed any thai dishes in West London in my 33 years stayi ng here in Hammersmith is The Churchill Arms in Notting Hill. Been a regular customer for all those years and only once did the standard drop on one takeaway when they changed chefs but other than that, have been CONSISTENTLY FANTASTIC! And No, they’re not giving me free food for that comment ...
Read moreCute tiny place with ok food but...
When we arrived there were two tables for two available. We were given the one closest the door (which is super-close) despite asking to have the other than was further from the door...Apparently other guests who'd reserved had specifically asked for that one but they didn't show up... (Avoid the table by the door at all costs.)
The food was fine but our experience marred by the constant flow of delivery drivers coming in to collect take out orders. This is a common theme in reviews for Poppy's.
There were probably 30 in the space of an hour. As I mentioned the restaurant is small - max 6 or 7 tables so having delivery guys coming in that often and just standing around bearing down on the four tables for two closest to the door really detracts from the atmosphere.
We had to keep asking people to shut the door to keep the arctic conditions outside.
I guess Poppy's is willing to sacrifice the in-restaurant dining experience because it does so much take out business - which is kind of a good sign but irritating to in-restaurant guests.
In case hygiene is important to you, we were given a plate that really needed a second wash...as it still had food encrusted on it from previous use.
Also due to the cramped conditions the waiter kept bumping in to my elbow which is boring/dangerous - without apology.
It's BYOB, cash only and they don't serve deserts.
30£ for two appetisers, two mains each with rice.
Would I go again? Possibly. But I'm more likely to keep trying new places that get closer to serving Thai food as served...
Read moreThe two things you immediately notice when you walk through the doors is how tiny the place is (5 tables) and the decor. Stuffed animals - from rabbits to birds to a giraffe wearing a top hat - surround you, so you better be comfortable with taxidermy. The bright, floral interiors make it seem like a quirky aunt's living room rather than a hunting lodge though, and it all makes for interesting dinner conversation. The service is polite and efficient, but those hoping for chit-chat should look elsewhere. There is one waitress and she has a lot to do! The menu is made up of classic dishes (noodles through to thai green and red curries) with no surprises. Personally I don't mind this; it is cheap and filling and tasty. The starters come in little shopping trolleys which we found adorable while the mains are served in the 'normal' way. We had the gyoza and duck wraps to start and then the tofu pad thai and chicken panang curry for mains. Both my husband and I were very happy with our food. My one issue - which someone else mentioned - was that there didn't seem to be many healthy options for starters. All of them were fried, and it would have been nice to have something lighter. The bill came to under £30 which we thought was excellent value, and we would happily...
