Firstly, the gentleman at the bar who seated us was friendly and welcoming — a great start to the evening.
Food Unfortunately, the food itself was disappointing. I ordered the masala poppadom while my friend had the plain one. To my surprise, the masala version turned out to be a much smaller portion, which felt a bit stingy compared to the regular one.
For mains, we both went with the butter chicken and pilau rice. When the dishes arrived, the butter chicken was swimming in ghee — reminiscent of a BP oil spill. We immediately suspected this wouldn't end well for our stomachs the next morning. Aside from the overwhelming butteriness, the dish was also overly sweet, and the chicken tasted more like pre-cooked supermarket pieces reheated in jarred sauce than anything freshly prepared.
We were really looking forward to the Peshwari naans, but they were overstuffed to the point of being sickly sweet. I’ve had many Peshwari naans at other Indian restaurants, and they’ve never been this sugary. Thank goodness the still water was sugar-free!
Service Generally decent. Our server was a bit moody at first, but thankfully warmed up as the meal went on.
Atmosphere The interior felt quite dated, but that’s subjective — I’ve read reviews from others who like the style, so it’s really a matter of personal taste.
Overall While this visit wasn’t a hit, I’d be open to giving the restaurant another try — perhaps opting for some of the drier dishes, which may be less prone to the richness and sweetness we experienced.
That said, I do feel it’s worth mentioning that around half an hour after the meal, I began experiencing some digestive discomfort, and the following morning was, shall we say, less than pleasant. This might be something for the kitchen to consider when balancing richness and overall composition (or maybe I just have a...
Read moreThis was my boyfriend favorite restaurant growing up in Wimbledon. He took me and friends there last night while our neighbor had warned us we shouldn't go. Anyhow, we decided to go there anyway and the starters were really great. Then the main came, chicken biryani was also good but unfortunately the sauce came after we already finished the dish which a little confusing. We had order chicken tikka masala and one other dish which were "Terribly sweet" we always love Indian food and had it often in a few countries. We never had such a sweet chicken tikka masala before in our lives. Anyhow, we were hungry and continued eating. We didn't want to complain but we've asked the waiter if the cook was mistakenly added sugar instead of salt. The waiter was not so friendly and told us the 2 dishes have to taste like this 😔 oh well, if you like sweet curry (really sweet), this is the best place for it. You won't be disappointed but for us, we will not return. Very sad...
Read moreWent there as a group of 8. Ordered and waited for our food. It came in dribs and drabs and the extras that came with our food, Rices etc were cold and we're sent back. When the bill came it was originally £129. Then the waiter returned and said the bill was wrong and that he had to change it. The new bill arrived for £183. Explained the poppadoms hadn't been charged for as well as one or two other extras. We paid up and left, glad to leave the place. Wouldn't recommend it and wouldn't return again. Plenty of other eating places...
