We visited the Rose and Crown on Sunday 11th Feb after a lovely long walk from Richmond park to Wimbledon village via Wimbledon common. We had booked a table for 3.15pm but made better time than we thought we would so arrived a good 25 mins early. I asked if there was any way they could seat us early, fully expecting to be turned away until our allotted time, however the staff were brilliant, found us a table, and made us feel so welcome. The pub itself is rather large with three main areas, the pub/bar is at the front as you walk in, with many places to sit and drink, and watch the rugby if it's on. Behind that is the main dining area which is fairly large, and then beyond is the outdoor covered patio. The decor felt traditional and comfortable, but clean and well kept. We sat in the dining area, and whilst the place was full (including the bar with people watching the rugby) it didn't feel too noisy, and our group could easily chat without needing to shout at each other, which was great for me as I struggle to hear in crowds. The service was fast, but we didn't feel rushed, and we didn't have to wait too long after ordering for our drinks to arrive. The menu is brilliantly varied with something for everyone, but, it being a Sunday, we were all looking forward to the roasts. Three of us shared the duo of lamb, whilst one of us had the vegan roast, and we all shared the truffle cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets (apart from the aforementioned veggie in our group). The waitress stated that the duo of lamb would be enough for a large dinner for two, however it was more than enough with three of us sharing plus some extras. We finished off with some coffee and desserts (I had the treacle tart which was amazing), and I have to say, all the food was amazing, could not fault a thing. It was also lovely to see the bar staff handing out bowls of water and treats for the pups as well. This is definitely a must visit for anyone wanting a country pub experience in the centre of town, will definitely be bringing our...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe have been to the Rose and Crown several times before. We have stayed in the rooms, had meals in the restaurant, and a Sunday lunch here in the past and have always been happy with the food and service. However on a recent visit for Sunday lunch we were very disappointed with the service. We arrived on time for our 3pm reservation and seated at our table with menus just as the Governments emergency alarm went off on everyone's phones. And that was it, it was like we were sat at the invisible table. No one came back to ask if we would like a drink or if we were ready to order. It was busy so we allowed the time to pass but when we saw a table of people come in 30 minutes after us and have their orders taken we had to go find and ask if someone could come and take ours. It was 3.40pm. A bottle of wine and a bottle of water was delivered fairly promptly but just dumped on the table. Good job the wine had a screw cap! We then waited till around 4.15/4.20pm until our meals were delivered. And now we become invisible again. The table that came in 30mins after us have had their puddings, paid and gone. We are waiting for our empty plates to be cleared and the offer of a dessert menu. After 30mins at 5.15 we get up again to go and get someone. Plates were cleared and desert menus delivered but yet again nobody comes back to us to take an order! At 5.40 we have had enough. Another table next to us has come in had their main, and desert, and are getting ready to go. Again we get up to get someone to bring us our bill and this time somebody came fairly quickly. This may have been because we were putting on our coats and picking up our suitcases. The bill was duly paid, no gratuity added and we went somewhere else for a desert and more drinks. The one star I have given is for the meal itself, the roast beef was lovely. Such a shame it was let down by such...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIt is so hit and miss, some of the team are warm and friendly, delivering great service and hospitality but sadly others are just rude and donāt have a clue about hospitality. We arrived and the receptionists was lovely but when we asked if we could sit outside, another lady took over the conversation and said āitās first come first serve out thereā, we asked if she knew if there were any tables currently free to which she sarcastically throw her hand towards the outside area and said āI donāt know, go look!ā There wasnāt, so we went back to reception to ask for a table inside, we were once again referred back to the angry lady who then asked if we were just drinking or eating too. We said eating and then things changed and a bit of warmth was shown to us. The food was excellent as was the lovely young enthusiastic gentleman who served us. At 3pm, another very stern and rude young lady, smacked a reserved sign on our table snapping at us that we had to be gone before the booking arrived and disappeared. The booking was only for 4pm and we had already finished our food and were just finishing off our bottle of English bubbles. It could have been handled so much better. I appreciate that Wimbledon must be a busy and stressfull time but we are locals and were polite, spending good money and being really reasonable and kind patrons. Sadly, the inconsistency of the service and hospitality was just not good enough. We finished up and left for another bottle of bubbles down the road at The Crooked Billot who were delighted to welcome, seat and serve us, the experience was chalk and cheese compared to The Rose & Crown. Donāt forget your...
