Sugar Cane Bar — Restaurant in London

The venue is nice, good selection of cocktails and the staffs are usually accommodating. However on this occasion I called and advise I would be attending the venue in two minutes if there were any tables available (required due to COVID) to which the lady (Asian accent) who answered polite informed that I could have a table for about two hours as they have a lot of reservations. Perfect for me as myself and guests had plans to be elsewhere. Upon arrival we was greeted by Max who made it a point that he's the only person there that answers the phone. Told max it was a lady who answered and advised of the 2 hour availability. However Max's ego was that he's the only person who answered the phone and it wasn't until I showed my last called number before we were directed to an empty reserved table as per phone conversation. Standing at the front between the rest of the seated guest proving that you have confirmed a seat was not very welcoming however Max was rather dismissive when asked if we could be seated or are the fully booked. His response was always referred to his fact that he's not taken our phone call and he's the only one who answers the phone. At the point of turning away we were offered seating. I came here with two friends on a rainy Thursday night in January - probably why it was relatively quiet, mostly couples coming in and out for a few drinks and nibbles, which made it feel even more cosy. It’s perfect for couples or a few friends because. While the upper floor isn’t huge, the seating is arranged in a way that gives you a sense of privacy, which I liked. There’s a different bar downstairs that wasn’t being used when I got there but it looks fantastic.

The music was good and at the right level for being able to hear it but also being able to talk comfortably. We shared fried, chicken wings and chicken gyoza, all of which were okay, nice enough to go with your drinks. The cocktails were good too, well mixed although we mostly had their classics and didn’t try much from the tiki menu. I thought they’d have more exciting glasses and presentation based on how fantastic the decor was but I either didn’t order the right things or it just wasn’t what I expected. This didn’t really take away from enjoyment though, we had a lovely evening. The staff member who served us was really nice and when we wanted to split the bill he calculated it super fast in his head for us.

From the moment we got there it was extremely unorganised and unprofessional. The team seemed they didn’t even know we were coming despite seeing my name on their bookings.

We were made to sit and wait for an hour for the cocktail masterclass and food.

When I asked how long it would be I was told that downstairs doesn’t open for a few hours (despite having confirmed a time we would be arriving). After expressing how disappointed I was we were then told we could go downstairs. We were then taken downstairs into a dark room with no people and no music.

After waiting around for even longer with no updates on what was going on, no one who had introduced themselves to say they were going to be hosting our evening. We also heard waiters take food back to the kitchen to complain it was freezing cold. We decided to leave.

We were then left with an extremely unhappy bride to be. We ended up going to “blame Gloria” where the team made our evening completely and we received excellent service and vibes.
