Headed into The Alexander for a cozy pub experience and a roast dinner that I didn't have to cook myself. Young’s pubs have a reputation in London for being top-notch, and this one is impressively large, complete with a sports bar. This means it can get quite busy on football days, but the lively atmosphere is part of the charm.
I decided to go for the chef’s roast to get a feel for the overall quality. Unfortunately, they were out of one of the meats, so I chose the slow-roasted lamb shoulder. It was presented well, and the server did a great job explaining the dish. However, I was a bit let down when I found a smaller piece of lamb than expected under the Yorkshire pudding, particularly for a £28 meal.
The plate was cold, which didn’t help on a chilly day, causing the gravy and food to cool down too quickly. The lamb had hints of garlic and rosemary but was a bit dry in places. The carrot was cooked perfectly, though the cabbage and celeriac didn’t impress much. The roast potatoes were crisp but lacked flavor, overwhelmed by the oil. The Yorkshire pudding was good, but that's expected.
Overall, it's a bit of a roasting, excuse the pun, but I've had better for less recently. Still, the pub’s overall atmosphere and setting are worth a visit.

Read moreI visited this pub with my friend for the very first time, as she had won a bingo prize there “lunch for two” & wanted to treat me. As I stepped in, I was hugely impressed with the size of it & choice of its decor. I’ve been to many beautiful country side pubs in different areas, however, this was certainly different. I loved the divide of the quiet area & proper busy ‘pub area’ with the huge screens for watching those important Footie matches & of course our famous SW19 Wimbledon Tennis Tournaments.🎾 Lunchtime menu had enough choices. I being vegetarian, we chose the plant based burger with salad & chips, which was delish with a glass of Pinot, followed by the icecream for my friend, & I tried Eaton mess. We were very pleased, satisfied & oh yes, full. (Promised we wouldn’t eat anything for supper & we didn’t). I found the staff very friendly, serving us with smile & asking if all was okay. I must also mention that we met Mick - the pub owner & his lovely wife Sarah, who stopped to have a quick chat with us which made my visit to Alexandra extra special. I’ve already told about this pub to both my boys who always love to visit good restaurants & pubs to have that “classy atmosphere & good food”. I’d experienced both when I visited this...
Read moreA sadly disappointing experience today. We were really looking forward to visiting after hearing of the lovely Christmas meal that was hosted for the community. It was an important day for us as my parents and in laws were meeting for the first time and drove many hours to visit. When we arrived, the parents chose to sit at a different table than the one that had been reserved for us. As I'm sure many can understand, this sometimes happens when parents are involved. The lady behind the bar was incredibly rude about it - refused to look at or acknowledge us when we were ordering, and said the coffee will be a while as the machine is next to the table we were supposed to sit at. I apologised for any inconvenience, even though the pub was quiet, and explained that families can be tricky sometimes. This unfortunately made us feel extremely unwelcome and heightened the nerves that we were all already feeling. We decided not to stay for lunch after our tray of coffee was plonked down and left on the table. Won't be back and can't recommend, but I do appreciate the lovely effort they made for the community...
