It's still a nice old pub!
'Ram Pubs', the tenanted side of the pubco Youngs, did a makeover of the Calthorpe shortly before they sold it, and around 50 other pubs, to Punch Taverns. Thus the Calthorpe benefits from that modernisation. As an aside, what didn't get modernised was the pub sign : it was spared the 'initial letter' nonsense seen on the rest of the estate.
Anyway, back to the pub.
I don't recall the brewery names but there were a couple of taps with real ale on. The staff were friendly and efficient. The price of £4.90 a pint was expected for the area.
There are sturdy seats and tables on the pavement in the adjacent Wren Street. We sat at the table nearest the corner entrance and watched the minimal traffic on the Grays Inn Road, while listening to someone singing from across the road, possibly from the London Welsh Centre. Across the road from the pub in Wren Street is St Andrews Gardens, making these outside tables a pleasant...
Read moreI can't believe I haven't left a review for this place in all the years I've been popping in here. I am not a local, nor a regular - although If I could afford to change either of those I think I would. This is one of those not quite residential pubs but definitely community pubs that keep this country going. The staff over the years have been amazing, with possibly the odd exception, but I won't complain. The pub itself has had a couple of refurbs since I have known it and I believe another one is on the cards care of the new guvnors. I could talk for hours about this little pub, but take a hint and get down there and give it a try. The beer has always been top notch - including the Guinness and there is a row of picnic tables down the side so you can get out in the...
Read moreBrilliant old boozer. Understated and simple and the sort of pub my mum would hate. Excellent. Was quite quiet when I went there on a Sunday evening, but nicely so. We went there as it is very nears Kings Cross station and I was saying goodbye to my brother. They sell Youngs beers but the pub has done well to avoid that really generic Youngs pub feel that has taken over so many of their city pubs. We ordered pie for 6 quid from the simple chalked up menu and, for that price, expected to be served something from the supermarket. Not at all - we got a massive serving of homemade pie and made a decision to...
