Been many pub and boozer city to sticks and this is definitely down there with the very worse of em.
Shambolic reservation 'affirmative action' system, disappointingly small, rammed primarily of certain 'types' i.e complete whitewash, borderline 'radical' security turning people away, blatant stereotyping like one wouldn't believe - almost comical.
Regrettably invited there and questionably stayed for 15min with a group of mates, witness chaps being profiled/quizzed at the door by security as if this place is the final word in luxury.
Was uncomfortable from the moment I observed security staff harassing several young men of a particular design (interpret as you may). Unlike 'them' we entered 'freely' and can unequivocally confirm DoE was 'not at full capacity' as the incompetent at the door stipulated. Some privalages? On this level in 2022? ....my word, somethings never change...its getting worse not better folks - don't enable it.
But what does one 'expect' ?

+1000 positive reviews absolute hogwash! Take with pinch of salt, unwelcoming, lifeless aesthetic soulless spot that's not worth the walk, but definitely warrants a sub +/- 500 character testimonial as such experiences need to be told.
Dead spot especially on hot summers day unless you 'fit in' with the shiny happy plastic fantastic unashamedly privileged bunch that don't mind overpriced watered down drinks served in filthy fingerprint-ridden glasses, So bad.
For the self-respecting reading this, optimism is not always a good thing, discernment is key with these 'managed' pubs.
Positives? Decent beer garden but just 'not worth it', oh yes apparently there is a cultural appropriation (interpretation) of 'jerk' chicken served there if you like that sort of thing.
If the reader understands what's 'happening' to the area on a ground zero level - trust your hunches and circulate your money elsewhere - just a really smarmy irritable place unless your under the influence or forcibly trying to fit in - foul as it gets.
Not all local boozers are worth their salt on so many levels and better permanently closed with the exception of the few family-run spots (if any) in South London.
Marginally better options (experiences) all directions 3 mins away, again averaging $8-10 for a Strella or 'Brewdog' gumption many of the unquestioning bravely ingest.
Terrible experience overall.
If you want a nice drink try Hope & Anchor, Trinity, +many more.

Read moreI came here with a friend on a Wednesday evening after work, hoping to get some food and a quick drink before attending a show in Brixton. When we arrived it was busy, so we joined the queue for the bar immediately in order to save time. It took us about five minutes to reach the front of the queue, but a further 10-15 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. Obviously mistakes can be made when things are busy, so we would have been willing to overlook this had all else been well.
We eventually attracted the attention of a barmaid and asked to order food. She asked what table we were at, and when we said we hadn't sat down yet, she said she couldn't serve us without a table number. (The menu had stated that a table number was required for those wishing to eat outside, but we would have been happy to eat inside). Not wishing to leave our place at the bar and queue for another 20 minutes, I suggested my friend could run outside to find a table while I gave her my order. "Fine," she said bluntly, then turned away and served another customer. (At the very least, I would have liked to have ordered some drinks.)
After a while I managed to get the attention of another bartender who said the same, and that the technology would not allow an order to be made without one. Anxious about the time, I suggested he could perhaps allocate a table for us so we could proceed with the order. Unfortunately he had already prepared a sarcastic response and thus ignored my suggestions completely: "Well, you can tell me your order if you like, mate, but I can't do anything about it." At this point we decided we had had enough and left the pub, resulting in the unnecessary stress of attempting to find somewhere else to eat before our show started.
A basic level of social etiquette is necessary if one wishes to work with the public. I am willing to forgive queuing for a long time, and I would be willing to forgive strange and unclear ordering rules if they had been explained to us with at least a degree of decorum. What I cannot accept is an establishment that considers it acceptable to treat its clientele with...

The Duke of Edinburgh is located in a quiet residential area in the backstreets of Brixton. The nearest Tube is Brixton, it’s a five minute walk to get here.
This pub was originally built in 1874. The pub you see today was built in 1937 by Truman’s principal architect A E Sewell. This pub is Grade II listed and features on CAMRA’s list of pubs with interiors of historic interest, this being of Outstanding National Importance.
The decor here is stunning, seemingly it looks untouched since the day the pub was built. At the front is the old Public Bar which has a pool table, traditional pews and its own servery. Head through an open walkway and you arrive into a large wood panelled bar with amazing stained leaded windows. There are some fantastic original features like the ornate fireplaces and the chequered spittoon in front of the long servery. At the back of the pub is a huge sprawling beer garden, I was told this is the largest in South London.
The beer selection is all keg and offers a mix of mainstream brews and local craft beers. I decided on a Cruzcampo, my pint was excellent, price point was a little punchy. The food menu is by @bandobelly who combine American, Caribbean and Asian flavours into Burgers and other comfort food options, most Burgers cost £12.
I arrived just after 12pm on a warm Saturday lunchtime in August. The pub was fairly quiet as it had just opened. I decided to plot up in the front bar area and watch the Olympics, a superb soulful soundtrack played in the background. I got chatting to one of the team who was kind enough to give me a guided tour, what a nice chap. This pub shows live footy, there are plenty of screens here to watch a game.
I must admit, I am a big fan of 1930’s interwar built pubs, so the @dukebrixton was right up my street. This is a handsome traditional pub with a splendid interior. The beer choice, tasty grub, friendly team and the enormous beer garden make for an impressive pub experience. This is definitely one to visit when in SW9.
