It pains me to write this as I was a huge supporter of the Mitre up until this weekend.
Previously, I've always had good food. The fish and chips & roast has always been good and the same I would've said about the service. I have reccomend the pub for years and directed multiple friends to the pub.
However, this weekend, I had a repeat of an experience I had not long ago and put down to a bad day.
On arriving at around 3 pm. on Sunday, it appeared several of the menu options had run out. What made this particularly frustrating was that the waitress would take the order and then return 5 minutes later to say the option wasn't available (this happened a handful of times).
With what I thought was going to be a really nice meal despite multiple staple sides being unavailable, we weren't too bothered - as long as a core roast was there with wine, we'd be happy. I opted to go with Venison Roast, which was on the specials board, whilst my partner ordered beef.
What was delivered was what looked like venison off cuts somehow glued together - the advertisement could not have been more different. Maybe the worst venison I've had. This was delivered with what we both considered to be pretty bland veg.
So pretty gutted, we moved to the dessert menu. Once again, the waitress returned to inform us 5 minutes later that not all the options were available. At this point, the experience had lost its gloss. Especially when the dessert did arrive - we ordered a chocolate moose which must have come in the equivalent of a small water glass. The dessert was nice, but it cost an eye-watering £7.50 for what I consider to be some moose with whip cream on.
What topped the experience off was on going to pay the bill, we informed the waitress of the quality of food. This was quickly ignored with little consideration, the payment was taken quickly with service charge, and no care was taken to consider any potential lessons learnt for the future or for other diners.
We spent a fair amount of money that afternoon and have been many times before. I would have to consider carefully before going back for anything more than something simple with fries.
It was a disappointing experience, and I feel the service paid for was not what was delivered. However, I'm sure this could be rectified quickly...
Read moreNot a good experience, several of our pre orders were out of stock and they had run out of almost every main option for those whose pre order was wrong (two people ended up with no food at all). Five of our pre orders were placed over the phone (two different calls on Monday and on Wednesday) and there was no record of those. The service was exceptionally slow (children waited two hours for their desserts and eventually left without them). Staff were pleasant but rather useless. My entire evening was spent with them coming to me with all the food so that I could find who it should go to so my meal got cold. Similarly as people were leaving and saying goodbye they interrupted every single conversation I was having to ask me questions about missing food (it took so long that some guests were leaving whilst others were still trying to find something still in stock to eat). At the end the manager was incredibly rude, tried to charge us for the desserts that the children didn’t have and all the incorrect dishes served. She also then told me that I should have been managing everyone’s individual payments. We had been asked at time of booking, and on arrival, if I was handling one bill or if each family was paying for themselves and we said both times it was the individual families. Because of the chaos with food coming out (to those lucky enough to get food) at different times, people had left at different times and had asked to pay their share but been undercharged. This left a £40 surplice at the end, which in the context (including my burger order not being available and my substitute being cold as I was constantly on my feet helping them with where food had to go and what was available as a substitution for all the food that was missing), I declined to pay (I paid for the three people I had brought and everything we had). In addition to all my conversations being interrupted by staff, this was sincerely one of the worst experiences - if not the worst - that I have had dining...
Read moreVery disappointed with our experience at The Mitre. Spent a few days in London visiting my friend who lives in Fulham. Had many meals out and this was the only one where I left feeling disgruntled. Firstly, on arrival the waitress took my debit card for the tab - I didn’t see anyone else give their card on their arrival, was it because we are both young and not as well dressed as other customers, you assumed we might do a runner? More importantly, I had the roast chicken and I left half of it as it was red through and had blood in it. I asked the waiter to take the food back to the kitchen so this could be checked as I didn’t want to be worrying about the possibility of food poisoning. No one came back to tell me otherwise. I had raise it again with another member of staff who sheepishly walked out and had to ‘enquire’ once more. Common decency would have been to cook another bit of chicken so that I could have finished my meal and ate the entirety of the most expensive bit on the plate, not just take it away and not tell me what’s going on. To top it off, the bill had a service charge which didn’t appear to be optional. Then upon leaving I walked into the staff huddled around the bar in what appeared to be ongoing gossip no doubt about us. As we walked out the front door not one member of staff recognised us and/or said goodbye. Shoddy experience. Better off going somewhere else cause we certainly will...
