Everything about this place is lovely until you decide to put something in your mouth.
The place is nicely decorated with comforting furniture that makes you want to stay for hours. The music and the noises coming from the kitchen make the atmosphere ideal as if that was the right place to sit down and have a rejuvenating meal. The staff was smiling and helpful, and we ordered 2 very beautifully plated meals - one shakshouka and the famous French toast.
I was impressed by now, and I was sure I was gonna have a blast from my toast. It looked like it was made with love. As soon as I put the fork in my mouth, everything went grey.
The toast wasflavourless, dull, boring... The ingredients didn't taste fresh. As soon as the flavour started developing, it immediately vanished as if you just ate a spoonful of eatable matter. The jam was so bad! How can you serve something that tastes like a reduction of an expired Don Simon Sangria bottle????
The shakshouka reminded me a guilty pleasure of mine from when I was 14 living in Portugal - I used to cut and blend lightly a bunch of buffallo tomatoes from my grandmas garden, season it with salt, pepper, vinegar and olive oil, and have it with toasted sourdough bread. If I thought this back in the day was sluggish, the shakshouka I had was the slug itself. The tomatoes must have been grown in the northest part of Iceland. The seasoning went on holiday, and the eggs decided to be overcooked because it was cold outside.
All I saw around was a little marketing trick smiling at you. I wouldn't spend my money here again unless I urgently needed a coffee and I happened to be there.
If you want to take pictures to your instagram, this is the best spot. The food would look lovely on your feed, and don't worry about the taste because your followers won't be able to try it anyway.
This was a very sad experience.
I decided to give it 3 stars, but I'm taking them back. 2 stars should be. How come can you call yourself 'The Good Egg' when the eggs I had in my...
Read moreWe arrived at 10.15am (the restaurant opened at 10am) for brunch to be told that there was a 20-25 minute wait due to staggering the orders for the chefs. We were surprised to see the restaurant itself was less than a third full. We waited 45 minutes in total outside - not the specified 20-25 min's. The manager let people in as and when he deemed it suitable. Seeing all the empty tables and chairs inside while waiting outside in a line seemed absurd. Still, we'd made the effort to travel there so decided to stick it out.
Once inside the food and service were good. People have raved about it and it was delicious but sadly, the poor management of making us wait so long with no communication had left us with a very poor impression. My husband has worked in the hospitality industry for over 10 years and made a good suggestion of seating people and offering them a complimentary drink while saying their order could be taken in 15/20 minutes. It seemed very disrespectful and arrogant to make customers stand outside while the restaurant had multiple empty tables and chairs available. My husband suggested that they were possibly in a state of overwhelm. Whatever the reason, I did not have the experience of being valued as a customer. We would have booked but they do not take bookings for brunch.
I hope this place does well and they grow into understanding how to manage more efficiently. Right now, it seems like they haven't transitioned into knowing fully how to run a restaurant and are still learning the ropes from their food truck success days.
If you have a lot of time and don't mind waiting for nearly an hour then this is the place for you. Otherwise, unless you can get a booking, I would not recommend it. There are too many other wonderful, appreciative restaurants in London happy to offer a much more enjoyable and well...
Read moreI have enjoyed very much my two visits, the first on 22 October 2019 and the second on 23 October 2019.
On the first visit I ordered the legendary egg and cheese melt bagel which included greens ; bacon optional ; I opted out.
The served product was every bit as good as I had been informed it would be. Plus the flat white coffee was hot and richly flavoured .
Today I had just the flat white which was so good I ordered a very satisfying second .
I thoroughly recommend this institution located as it is in the heart of Stoke Newington a long way from the high street fast food and coffee chains.
The Good Egg has plenty of old fashioned soul and customer care manifested in the very palpable good vibe easily sensed upon entering the place.
The sense of soul is amplified by the obvious satisfaction of the other habitués whether glued to their laptop per kind favour the free wifi, sitting with their friends or enjoying the company of their children. Both young mums and dads are included in this last category, with children as young as just a few months up to later toddler aged .
Ostensibly Jewish but seemingly willing to bend the rules for an inclusive destination for all.
Thoroughly recommended , not...
