The Jolly Gardeners 📍49-51 Black Prince Rd, London SE11 6AB 🚇 Vauxhall 🍺 £6.00 Forest Road Posh Lager ❤️ One of SE11’s finest pubs. . The Jolly Gardeners is located on a quiet backstreet in Vauxhall. Vauxhall Tube is just a ten minute stroll away. . This pub was built 1880 and has some showbiz claims attached to this pub’s heritage. Charlie Chaplin’s father used to play the piano in here and was a regular fixture in many of the pubs of the area. Also, a scene from the film Snatch was filmed in here, it was the scene when Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones) made the “shrinking balls” speech with his Desert Eagle 5.0. . The decor here is simple but elegant, there is an open and spacious feel in this two bar pub. The left hand side bar is set up for the wet and the right bar is laid out for a full on Gastropub experience. At the back of the pub is a cosy covered beer garden complete with TV. . The beer choice here is a celebration of London breweries and the finest imports from across the continent. My tipple on the visit was a pint of Forest Road Posh Lager which hails from Hackney brewery @forestroadbrew ,my pint was top notch and I really enjoyed it. The food here is on another level and receives many accolades. The inquisitive being that I am, I thought I would sample something from the lunch menu. I ordered the Smoked Haddock & Samphire with Mango Bhaji’s with Per Peri Fries. The food was out of this world and left me with a comforting zing in my mouth. . I arrived just after opening on a Friday lunchtime, apart from three punters in the dining section I had the pub to myself. The playlist was easy going jazz which set a relaxing vibe to spending time here. The service was great, I was served by a top fella who was so laid back he should have been horizontal. . @thejollygardeners is the highest rated pub in the area and for good reason. This pub supports London’s amazing breweries and has a wizard chef in the kitchen. The service here is first class and you’re made to feel very welcome. I couldn’t fault this place, a top top South London pub. . ℹ️ Info correct on...
Read moreI recently attended my work Christmas meal at The Jolly Gardeners, but was very disappointed with the meal we had received. I'd read great reviews of the food, and our group was so excited for the food to come- we were booked onto the Christmas Set meal as there was 11 of us.
The set meal consisted of 4 small plates of potatoes and 4 small plates of cauliflower wings to be shared amongst the group. These portions were indeed small once shared amongst the group, so we were really looking forward to receiving the main. The main course followed this theme, 2 slices of meat (or veggie alternative), 3 potatoes- followed by 3 small bowls of carrots and sprouts to be shared amongst the group. Pudding followed which was a slice of Peanut cheesecake, which over half of the group didn't eat as they were not fans of peanuts.
With the current cost of living situation, I had budgeted and saved for this one meal where our work team get together, and enjoy ourselves at this time of year. I felt so disappointed after eating this meal that was charged at £35 each (plus service charge), and with what was meant to be a nice occasion actually dampened the mood by the food we had received. I've never left a restaurant before hungry, and having to go to the shop on the way home to buy myself more food.
I'm sad to say that I would not recommend this venue to anyone from...
Read moreWe recently visited The Jolly Gardener in Lambeth, and overall, I had a really pleasant experience. From the moment we walked in, the service was excellent—friendly, attentive, and professional without being overbearing. The staff were more than happy to answer questions about the menu and make great recommendations, which really helped us feel welcomed and relaxed.
The atmosphere of the pub strikes a lovely balance between lively and cozy.
It's clearly a popular spot with locals, and I can see why. The decor has a nice mix of traditional charm and modern touches, giving it a warm and inviting feel. We sat in the garden area for part of the evening, which was a real bonus—perfect for a summer night.
As for the food, it was solid pub fare with a bit of a twist, done well. No fish and chips here, though!
I wouldn't say it blew me away, but everything was fresh and well-prepared. The drinks menu was extensive with a good selection of beers, ales, and cocktails.
All in all, I’d definitely recommend The Jolly Gardener. With its great service and welcoming vibe, it's a place I'd be happy...
