I've been meaning to review this place. I've been about 4 or 5 times in the past year, each time trying a different sandwich, and on every occasion I'd give it 5/5.
It's an Italian American style deli with a menu that offers a variety of combinations. The meat quality is excellent, presented, sliced and prepared right in front of you and served on a middle eastern bread that works really well with the sandwiches.
Staff are really welcoming and friendly, happy to suggest a sandwich option if you're struggling to decide and willing to substitute ingredients to your preference.
While most patrons seem to takeaway, I eat in at one of their tables as I like the retro vibe. In the corner they have a couch, TV, old games consoles (I think there was a Super Nintendo with some games), a VCR and some movies on VHS.
The store is located down an alley off of Old London Road. I think they might also own the vintage clothing shop next door.
If I were being critical, price might be an issue for some. Given that most items aren't a hot meal and sandwiches are generally regarded as a fast and cheap lunch option, as well as the current economic climate, this won't be for everyone.
In my view, the sandwiches are worth it as they're deep filled with premium cold cuts and are big enough to share between two, unless you have a big appetite. I'd much rather pay for a sandwich of this quality than mass produced, low grade, formed meat you'd get for half the price at the...
Read moreYou're invited down a long alley by brickwork painted salmon. A fanfare of hanging overhead lights. On your right a vintage store (with pieces that for once actually seem pre-loved). Then you're at neighborhood subs and deli. It has the branding 90s skate culture evolved into; chunky laid back typeface on the logo. You order 'the spicy one' sub thinking you'll get the usual triangle stock sarnie affair and your man regrettably informs you they've only got the focaccia. You play along - 'what a shame!' - whilst your mouth waters. You've 100% quit coffee but you find a perfect Sunday latte in your hand and then - sitting outside away from the street - the beast arrives. In proper deli waxed paper wrapping an enormous wedge of sub is in front of you. Immediately you split the thing - you've got to cycle back. It's pre split. Not their first rodeo. The half you eat is fresh as anything. Chili jam and mozzarella complement the salty bread. You recover the escapee salami circles from the paper and your sandwich is done. You think - do yourself a favour. Come back....
Read moreThe Neighbourhood Subs & Deli is the modern take on deli style sandwiches and subs that everyone has been craving. They absolutely deliver in service, variety and quality. The portion sizes really do justify the prices on the menu because the sheer amount on a single sandwich/sub. The balance of flavours is right up there with the best, putting to shame the likes of subway and cafe sandwiches. We all know what makes or breaks a really good sandwich is the choice of bread. Their breads are second to none and play a crucial role in the eating of the sandwich and elevation of flavour profiles. Beautiful putter crust, soft interior and just the right texture when chewing, what more can you ask for. They offer a great deal of hot and cold drinks to accompany your meal or to drink alone. I really enjoyed my time at the neighbourhood subs & deli. Nestled in a virant and beautiful alleyway with great seating and vintage clothing store right next door tempting you to take a peak. This is what Kingston needs to keep developing and diversifying its food...
