April 2024 update:

Unfortunately, I'm downgrading my previous 4-star review of Pacific Tavern to 3 stars. My recent visit fell short of my initial positive experience due to several unexpected issues.

The live music performance during my visit on 27 Apr 2024 at 5.30pm was uncomfortably loud. The excessively loud music made communication with the wait staff virtually impossible, especially considering our reasonable request for a quieter seating area was not fulfilled.

Furthermore, I was disappointed with the response to my declaration of being autistic. The staff didn't meaningfully acknowledge or understand my needs and opted to primarily interact with my partner (leaving me to feel like I was being ignored). A manager offered a strange apology when I declared my disability.

Pacific Tavern's menus still lack clear allergen and dietary labelling. This remains a significant issue for diners with allergies or dietary restrictions.

I hope Pacific Tavern will address these concerns.

February 2024 experience:

My partner asked to have her tea with the tea bag/leaves to the side so that she could control the tea's strength (to accommodate her digestion/stomach sensitivities). We were twice served a teapot with tea leaves already in the boiling water, which meant my partner could not fully enjoy the tea. Our waiter eventually sorted this out, but it was a needless stressor and disruption to our evening, especially as my partner's request was reasonable.

The grilled sweet potatoes were undercooked, so I sent the dish back and asked for them to be cooked longer. I think an entirely new dish was prepared for me instead, but I would have been happy to have had the original one cooked a bit more in a pan. The taste of the sweet potato dish was too bland for my liking, which I fed back to our waiter with the important disclaimer that my palette is based on South Asian cuisine and spices.

The desserts were good. I especially liked the banana cake.

I would like more vegan food options like pies and traditional meals with vegan proteins replacing the meat. I would also like clearer menu labelling to indicate which dishes are suitable for different dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and so on).

We enjoyed the atmosphere and wooden furnishings. Our waiter was great and attentive. We would like to come...

Here’s what we had.. 👇🏼

Mains

The Grilled Sweet Potato, Chili Beans, Coconut & Coriander dish is a symphony of flavors. The sweet potato, cooked to perfection, provides a delightful contrast to the spicy chili beans. The addition of coconut and coriander elevates the dish with a refreshing zest.

The Seabream Crudo is a masterpiece of simplicity and flavor. Paired with coconut, corn, and lime, it offers a taste of the ocean like no other. Each bite is a celebration of freshness and subtlety.

A standout is their Grilled Baby Chicken, seasoned to perfection and served with mole rojo, shiitake mushrooms, and miso. This dish is a rich, flavorful journey with every bite offering a new discovery.

Dessert

For dessert, the Grilled Banana Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream is a must-try. It's a delightful dance of warm and cool, with the grilled banana cake offering a comforting embrace to the cool, creamy vanilla ice cream.

The Baked Cheesecake with Seasonal Berries is a testament to the chef’s expertise. The cheesecake is flawlessly smooth, and the seasonal berries add a fresh, tart edge that makes this dish irresistibly delightful.

Drinks

Their coffee is a revelation - rich, robust, and incredibly satisfying. It's the perfect end to a meal or a great pick-me-up.

The Prosecco is lovely, effervescent, and pairs wonderfully with the meal, adding a celebratory note to the...

🚇 Canada Water 🍺 £7.00 Stonewood Pale Ale

A Popular Hybrid Venue.

The Pacific Taver is located in the heart of Rotherhithe, close to Greenland Dock. The nearest Tube is Canada Water, it’s a ten minute walk to get here.

This pub was built in the late eighties as part of the redevelopment of Rotherhithe after the closure of the docks.

The Pacific Tavern opened its doors in December last year, prior to that the building was used as a Vietnamese restaurant and The Quebec Curve pub which closed in 2011.

The main bar area has a contemporary feel with a mix of traditional furniture and eclectic artworks. The servery is a good size, so no need to queue. If you head out the back, there is a huge covered space with an open kitchen, outside bar and loads of benches to perch on. There is also an outside seating area for soaking up the sun.

The beer line up was all keg with lots of craft options available. I decided on a pint of Stone & Wood Pacific Ale by @stoneandwooduk . This was my first try of this beer and a fine drop it was too, price point was a little punchy. The food menu has a Mediterranean and Antipodean feel. I ordered the Kiwi pie, just incase you’re wondering, the pie contained beef rather than New Zealand’s national bird. My food was excellent, £13 all in.

I arrived around 8pm on a warm early evening back in May. The main bar was quiet with a few punters, the soundtrack was a superb 70’s soulful playlist. The place to be was the outside covered space, it was absolutely buzzing with a cracking upbeat atmosphere. The staff here were great, I got a warm welcome and the service was excellent.

There is plenty to keep you entertained, this pub hosts Live Music, DJ nights and Open Mic, all events are on the pub’s socials.

@thepacifictavern is a hybrid venue that is proving to be a popular destination. This pub is not one for the traditionalist due to the Gastropub vibes. Having said that, the outside space is a great spot to plot up with mates for a beer. All said, this place is definitely worth a visit.
