🚇 Canada Water 🍺 £6.20 San Miguel ❤️ A splendid Victorian Rotherhithe remnant. . Nestled in a secluded street in Rotherhithe, just off the Thames Path you’ll find The Ship & Whale. The nearest Tube is Canada Water which is a ten minute stroll to get here. . The pub was originally built in 1767 and rebuilt in 1880 by Trumans. This used to be a dockers pub who toiled in now landlocked Greenland dock. . This is a one bar pub that is “L” shaped and is sumptuously decorated. The walls are painted a deep red and the ceiling a rich green, this gives the pub an opulent Victorian feel. There are plenty of tables and chairs plus a few chesterfields and wing chairs to relax in to. The stylish servery is located on the right hand side which has an ornate dark wood back bar. Around the walls are lots of prints and photos depicting Rotherhithe’s past. At the rear of the pub is a good size beer garden for the warmer months. . The beer line up had lots of mainstream choices and two cask ales were available. I decided on a pint of San Miguel, my pint was lively and price point a bit above average. The food menu is British pub grub and roasts are available on a Sunday. . I visited on a Saturday afternoon around 3pm. The pub was fairly busy with a few couples, the odd solo drinker plus a large group in for a children’s party. The atmosphere was relaxed and chilled with a soundtrack of rock classics including Crosstown Traffic by Jimi Hendrix. The service was good, the lady who served me did so with a smile. I took a seat and couldn’t help but admire the decor here, it really sets a classy Victorian tone. . In 1969 Surrey Docks closed due to containerisation and the local landscape changed forever. Huge swaths of Rotherhithe were redeveloped over the next two decades and thankfully the @shipandwhale navigated the change. It was great visiting part of Rotherhithe’s heritage, I would definitely recommend a visit here. . ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 22.04.23

I give two stars , 1 for the food and 1 for the looks of the place. The staff were quite rude, the place was not busy at all, one of the girls who took the order with us from the beginning was showing signs of being really annoyed taking the order, we waited quite a while to start ordering drinks and food. When she brought us cutlery she left them on the table and I had to pass a pair to my brother, I realized after that with a couple older than us she politely left the cutlery on the table, smiled at them having a compleately different attitude, it’s funny cause we reserved the table, and she made us feeling so poor, like we did something bad to her when we really are such a polite persons. When we had the food my brother had finished his beer and the waitress didn't even ask if he wanted something else to drink with his food. When my brother politely signaled to the waitress that he wanted something else to drink she arrogantly told him that she would have come to the table when she had time, even when we ordered dessert the service was very slow. When we got the bill we asked to remove the service charge cause we didn't liked it at all, just after we've paid and we were leaving we saw the waitress who tooks our payment laughing with the other waitress and our bill in the hands, well that was the cherry on the cake, it's a bit of a shame cause the food was very good, we’ve watched the match the vibes were cool, also the place looked nice, but if I’ll have to come back here I will rather go somewhere else.

The pathetic visual appeal of the burger was a huge disappointment and having a tomato slice seemingly larger than the burger along with a solo leaf of lettuce should be totally unforgivable. However, the ingredient quality is two octaves higher than the looks. The bread, whilst I’m sure of the preservative containing type was very fresh as was the garnish. Despite my fears, the beef had not been frozen and was delicious, but small and £1.50 for cheese is excessive. Much better than it looks, but only warrants three stars mostly due to the unacceptable presentation and high price. Savvy regular diners ordered other dishes which were presented much better. But, don’t believe the website about craft beer: Two different BrewDog bottles is all you will find.

While the food is fairly decent, the staff however have an attitude that really does the place no good at all which also reflects on misleading deals they offer and really bad service when you ask them clear questions to clarify the daily offer but many times receive misleading answers that always end up in a pricier bill (how come this is always the case I wonder!- why can't they give a straight answer when you ask them for a clarification is beyond me!).

This has happened more than once so it was not a matter of them having a single bad day but rather a matter of having a certain attitude. When we complained we were faced with even more attitude and even rudeness!

We are locals and intended to visit back often but we are now totally reconsidering!

Also when they serve drinks the quantity they serve varies greatly! Unacceptable! Me, my husband and a friend ordered the same drink, all three glasses had different levels of drink inside and all three were much less than what my husband had received for the same drink on another day. The same with beer. The pint there seems to vary from glass to glass.

My suggestion to them: start being friendlier to customers, and remember to be polite and use polite wording when you speak, that could make wonders for your business. Also when faced with a complaint they should be more open to what we are saying and not ironic and dismissive!! Also they should be clear with their deals, especially when I ask 5-6 clarification questions, they have no excuse not giving a straight answer as to what is the offer exactly and what I am paying for.

The woman who seems to be in charge there is a totally unprofessional, an unacceptably behaved person. You lose more customers than you think like that. A pity, because as I said the food is pretty decent.

As an interior: cosy but rather very very old, and dusty at places, in need of some upkeeping and major...
