Booked this for a night away to celebrate our wedding anniversary, little did we know they had inflated the price by an extra £100 due to Olly murs playing at the castle which I wouldn’t mind if it was worth it but unfortunately I feel ripped off, the staff I can’t complain about tbh but the hotel is at the bottom of a big hill 25% incline which was ok for me but my wife struggled with her knees, The hotel is also in need of a spruce up as it’s quite dated, wood chip wallpaper etc, the room was also looking tired but the bed was terrible, possibly the worst bed I have ever slept in we both woke with bad backs & necks, my side dipped a lot in the middle and I tossed & turned all night there is no bottled water given just glasses from the bathroom tap. We went out into town at night and on return at 9.45pm considering the hotel was full everywhere was locked up, no bar or anywhere to get any type of drink (even water) The restaurant claims to be 4 star AA rosette so come breakfast time we were looking forward to a nice breakfast, we were so wrong, my wife had a full English, burnt mushrooms and she said the sausage were horrible and bacon not much better along with the cheapest beans available hence she left most of it, I’m a celiac so I opted for the haddock & scrambled egg with two pouched eggs on the side, both pouched eggs like bullets and my toast burnt to black, I also had another piece of toast with jam, the staff were aware I was gf but the jam seamed very very solid like one solid blob which made me think did it have gluten as the occasional jam can have but knowing the staff knew I was gf I thought it can’t have so I had some then 1.5 hours later I spent the next 4 hours in pain so it obviously did have gluten which means it’s very very cheap jam, glad we didn’t eat there at night which we had planned but due to location we didn’t so not to have to walk back into town up the hill again, wise choice because if breakfast was that poor then god help anyone having a evening meal there, would I go back to Ludlow, definitely yes, would I book this hotel again,...
Read moreHaving called up to booked a Sunday lunch in the outside seating area the previous day we were confused as to why we were asked to be seated indoors (it was a beautiful day). We asked to sit outside on one of the smaller tables that we were told was not appropriate for food so that we could enjoy the sunshine and have a drink before our meal. We were then told that we could in fact have food at that table. It was here that the problem began. The smaller table we were sat at was almost forgotten about as it was hidden around the corner. Our service was slow and the waitress was so shy that she didn't say a single word to us when she took our order. When our food arrived the portions were very small, with possibly the worlds smallest potatoes sat on the plate. There was a dribble of gravy on the plates, and despite asking for some more (twice) there was barely enough to cover the food (or lack of) that we had. The taste was distinctly average, not what we would expect from a 4* hotel and to top it off the string was left in the Lamb for us to find half way through our meal (see photo). We also realised that the reason we had originally been asked to sit indoors was because walk-in guests were given priority on what seemed to be a first come, first served basis despite us specifically reserving an outdoor seat. We did ask about our booking and we were then told that there was 'no note that we had asked to be seated outdoors'. Having really looked forward to treating ourselves to a nice meal in a highly regarded establishment we were both extremely disappointed and left feeling like we were almost an...
Read moreWe visited as a group, booking online was a simple process, as was checking in and arranging breakfast the next day. The parking was perfect and the location being out of the town, quiet with lovely views but only a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk away from the centre of Ludlow met or needs well. ||The Cliffe was lovely and clean, the beds were very comfortable. One room had a problem with a shower screen, another missing window latches and the ground floor room was a little too warm but signs on arriving clearly state that they are a four star restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel so was not unexpected.||We were catered for well at breakfast, which is not always easy, as a group of ten. Individual bottles of fresh juice and orders taken at the table for cereals etc, as well as the main breakfast, was a pleasant change from the usual of being left out buffet style and was greatly appreciated those of us more germphobic than others! The chef made marmalade was absolutely delghtful. Had we not eaten a large meal the night before, some of us would have been tempted by the haddock and scrambled egg, which sounded delicious. ||We have already recommended the hotel to others and would not...
