Top tier restaurant.
Great Japanese food (even by "Japan" standards, not just British!), sensible pricing and a very respectable drinks menu.
Music, as you'd guess, is of the new wave genre (fairly chill dance music, not too "pop"-y)
Walk in of 2, sat at the bar. We've tried a few ramen places around town over the years. Whilst they are often "passable", they're never somewhere I'd be excited to go.
This place was fantastic. My partner and I are both foodies (and she lives in Japan for a while!), and we've been to a lot of the "better" restaurants around Manchester. In terms of the quality of the food itself, this place is punching well above what you'd expect. We enjoyed it more than sparrows, it's a similar level to Hawksmoor and just as enjoyable as el gato negro.
When considering that good Japanese food can be difficult to find, and somewhat expensive when you do, this place really is a hidden gem.
Music was right up my street and a bit of a blast from the past, as it had the same vibes as some of my early WHP experiences. The store street nostalgia was a welcome addition!
At the moment, there's an awful lot of bad food charging £20+ a head. However, places like this restore my faith in there being good places to eat.
We also got a few drinks, which was balanced well around adventurous and "what you'd expect".
Absolutely will be...
Read moreDelicious food but service was off. Second time going and both times sat at the kitchen counter. First time sat directly in front of the chefs and had a great experience, chatting about the food and cooking. Second time sat more towards the bar area and it was not a good experience. The bartender didn’t seem interested in engaging in conversation the way the chefs were, which especially stood out because the people sat down from us nearer the chefs were constantly being engaged with and chatted to. Additionally, once we’d finished our ramen the bill was brought to us without being asked for and with half of our drinks left, no offer of seeing a dessert menu which we were wanting but completely put off of and felt pushed out. Other front of house were no issue, just seems the bartender isn’t interested in giving quality service. It would’ve been understandable if there’d been a turn on the table and, as a walk-in, we’d been informed when sitting that there was a tight turn, but it didn’t seem that busy and there were many tables empty and from where we were sat could see the POS that showed no other tables booked for where we were so it just felt like we were being pushed out for no reason. As I say the food was great and I’d still come back, just only if I wasn’t sat on the bar side of...
Read moreJust perfect. Manchester showing its finest yet again. Brilliant, warm, knowledgeable, friendly, fun, laid back and super professional service from the moment you walk in. Felt at home as a solo diner at an odd early afternoon hour, the moment I arrived. And it got better. Super tight menu and hence everything cooked with real flavour, originality and specialism. Lovely space, super-strong short wine list by the glass and basically nothing dull, routine but equally nothing not totally accessible and desirable on the menu. Terrific miso mushrooms and celeriac ramen full of deep flavour but light enough to require discipline not to wolf in seconds. Very generous, well cooked and creative sides and small starter/snack dishes alongside. Fun to sit at bar - as per the best bar tables such as Brat - really welcomed in by the service team, whilst also relaxed and well timed and not once hurried or without water. Checks, chats. All done. Exemplary service, outstanding value. As Jay Rayner said recently Manchester is having a strong food moment. But it’s not just the excellence of small plates and modern European such as The Alan (also magnificent friendly, relaxed, proactive, informed service), Elnecot, Ernst and more. Now Wave adds Ramen and more to the mix. Can’t wait to...
