Tokyo Ramen In Manchester ! Ramen , what more in life can you ask for on a rainy Manchester day ? Noodles, soup, and an amazing garnish. I am a big fan of ramen I mean I have a got a tattoo of a ramen on my arm after all So today’s destination is Tokyo Ramen, after discovering them on twitter (another place retweeted them in my timeline) they quickly made it to my priority list of new place to start We went on a thursday for lunch, arrived get greeted by one of the staff (very friendly man), wide open kitchen catch my eyes, the lovely staff show us our seats and handover the menu, quick glance around, it is a cosy place but my eyes and nose wonders back to the kitchen, the smells ! AMAZING !!! 2019 why haven’t we invented scratch and sniff you’d love it So the menu, small menu, it’s about quality not quantity, they make 200 Litres of the ramen stock (chicken broth) per day and that is it. Offer you 3 ramens, 4 small plates and the drinks at the bottom My friend went for the torched pork belly ramen ( Shoyu) £11.75, I chose the Koji fried chicken (Tantanmen) £11. 75 after I ask the waiter what koji is ( from what i understand it is a fungus that is used in fermenting soybeans ) The food arrived quickly and it look scrumptious, we dig in after I asked for a fork (yeah I know how uncivilized of us), the flavours are well balanced, the chicken broth is delightful and the noodles are astonishing! The koji chicken was so crisp yet super tender. No talking just eating, am I in heaven ? not sure but by the time I have finished I am in food coma, belly full, inside warm, happy me. Tokyo Ramen will be one of my favorite place for 2019 can’t wait to go back Thank you for the experience

Food - 5/5 Ambiance - 3/5 Accessibility - 2/5 Cost - 4/5 Service - 5/5 Summary - 4/5 This is a small venue (possibly has a cover for 30 people max) that is very simple/basic in decor, but speaks volume when it comes to their food! Open seating areas on two levels where you're encouraged to squeeze in and share a table, with an open kitchen (it's fun watching them prepare the food) and a very small menu. What they lack in diversity/quantity of choices, they certainly make up for quality. I'm no ramen expert but their broth certainly is rich and flavourful. The spicier option (tantanmen - koji fried chicken) also packs a bit of a kick (it wasn't too spicy for me, but I was surprised by it). I had the pork belly ramen (shoyu) which was really good; the sous vide egg was perfect with a nice sweet yolk. I do wish it had a bit more ingredients like straw mushrooms or naruto added rather than just pork, egg, seaweed and chopped up pickled vegetables. I also tried the crispy octopus (octopus karaage) with chickpea miso puree which was really good (although a tad too salty for my palate) and beautifully plated. I'm not sure if the venue is wheelchair friendly (the top dining area certainly isn't as there are stairs) and I don't think there's enough space on the ground level. Tip: there is free water provided at the table just above the stairs (you'll have to help yourself) and as ramen dishes are big in volume, you can skip on ordering drinks. Service was good, staff were friendly and dishes came out relatively fast.

I have wanted a ramen bowl outside of Japan and Australia that packs a punch in terms of flavour and texture. Tokyo Ramen definitely delivers on both fronts! I ordered a Koji Fried Chicken to start — the ssamjang and sweet corn mayo dressing was a little too intense (I like my fried chicken usually with a soy/garlic sauce/marinade or a dipping mayo at the most, but this still was succulent and cooked really well. Next time I’d ask to have the sauces served separately. Two ramens were on the mains this time — classic Shoyu and Tantan. The former was fantastic and packed tonnes of umami — the torched pork belly was probably the best I’ve had outside of local chains in Osaka and Tokyo; fat rendered, crisp and actually full of flavour; not just boiled and sliced. I usually don’t order Tantan ramen — I mostly stick to Miso, Shio and Shoyu but thought I’d give it a go. The spicy tare was too overwhelming and I felt it lost all the broth’s flavour. The fried chicken on top was a lot nicer (as it was plain) than the starter, but that’s just my preference. On each both, the noodles tasted different; the Shoyu had somewhat raw/starchy cooling whereas the Tantan had perfect hard noodle texture, I like my ramen harder than most people I know but wished the cooking was more consistent. A point of feedback would be to ask customers how hard they want their noodles, but otherwise I will be coming back!!

If you never tried ramen before I’d definitely recommend this place because it sets the bar high

I went to this restaurant the other day and man am I pleased with the quality and food. I enjoyed the flavours of the broth and how the noodles were in the best possible tenderness and softness in my personal liking. I had the shoyo ramen and boy did I live for the perfect delicacy and texture of the pork. It was very well made and tasted so fresh and appetising!

The atmosphere was pretty hipster and was really busy but I’m someone who likes atmospheres like that. It makes the vibe of the restaurant pretty authentic. I was personally pleased with the aesethics of the restaurant considering how it was small yet comfy and didn’t feel like them forced ‘posh’ restaurants that didn’t really match at all. The food, music and design completely matched and I was honestly pleased with it.

With the service I would say it’s top notch considering the staff is completely limited. The waiter was very friendly, helped out a lot and I actually didn’t feel judged at all when I asked for any sort of service from the waiter. I appreciated this since my biggest pet peeve is when it feels awkward, however I felt so comfortable in the restaurant

The drinks were top tier too because I’ve never tried Ramune soda but god did I enjoy it. The menu as a whole was limited but I appreciate and enjoy the fact that the price actually reflected the quality which is rare when it comes to Japanese restaurants and foods icl.

As I whole, I genuinely feel like this place was one of the best Japanese restaurants I ever tried! Through my observations I found it even more impressive how such a good restaurant managed to create such amazing work with such a small working team. If anything, I can definitely see this restaurant being so much more successful in the future. The only thing I would complain about is how I wish I found this place a lot sooner so I could brag about it to my friends. Keep up...

If only talking about food, the Ramen is tasty, it is a bit different from any other Ramen restaurants, I had the vegetarian Ramen, the soup base tastes nice and special, the firmness of the noodles was just right, it wasn’t too soft and soggy like some other Ramen restaurants, so I can really give a high rating for its food. However when you dine out, it is not just about food, there are some other factors you need to consider, for example the services provided. If talking about service, I would really give it a low rating. What happened was the restaurant claimed itself opens at 12pm for lunch on a Friday, so we got there at 12pm, it wasn’t opened, while we were waiting outside, a waiter suddenly put a written note on the window saying : open at 12:15pm, so it suddenly changed its opening time and we needed to wait for extra 15 mins outside in the heavy rain, ok we then just waited, at 12:10pm a delivery van was there delivered stuff to the restaurant, the waiter saw us still waiting outside in the miserable weather, he still told us it’s not opened yet he opened the door just for the delivery. Ok fine, so when it was 12:15pm they still didn’t open or told us to come inside despite we had been waiting for 20 mins in the heavy rain, so I was fed up and I just got in myself and telling them it passed 12:15 the opening time and it was raining heavily outside can I just come in, it wasn’t the kind service I would expect from any restaurant I would say. When the waiter was taking order and serving us food, he lacked smile and no friendly attitude, and the food there was a bit pricey provided the standard of service and also it was like a fast food restaurant, everyone just sat on a big bench without private space, and I think they expect you just eat and finish the food...
