5-Star Review for a family run, award winning restaurant, with dishes created bybthe owner and his daughter hence flavour combinations that dance on your palate: The Great Kathmandu, Manchester – A Culinary Pilgrimage Worth Every Bite Step aside, mediocrity — The Great Kathmandu isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a temple of taste perched in the heart of West Didsbury, Manchester, where every dish is a devotion and every spice a prayer answered. From the moment you step inside, you’re enveloped in an atmosphere that whispers elegance and excellence in equal measure. The lighting? Just right. The service? So attentive, they’d notice if your soul was thirsty. And the food? Ah, the food — a symphony of Himalayan majesty wrapped in garlic naan. The vegan momo dumplings? Silky pockets of joy with a dipping sauce that might just bring a tear to your eye. The lamb korma? Smoky, slightly spicy, and so tender it clearly has trust issues. The special mixed grill? So juicy, and tasty, absolutely worth having, would happily feed two. It would need a couple of sherpas to carry up a mountain! Warning the chapattis are the size of dinner plates!! Every dish is layered, balanced, and executed with the precision of a Michelin-starred monk. This isn’t just dinner — it’s a guided expedition up the flavor mountains, led by chefs who know their way around authenticity like Sherpas of the stove. The Great Kathmandu doesn’t just live up to the hype — it serenades it, roasts it to perfection, and serves it with a side of mint chutney. Run, don’t walk. Book the table. Order everything. And when your tastebuds ascend to a higher plane, just whisper: Namaste. Incredible hosts and atmosphere, best utensils to checkout their hilarious Instagram and look out for new nights during the week.

This is my third visit - I'd not been for a few years so was willing to try again. Wish I'd not bothered. I cannot fathom the volume of positive reviews for such a poor restaurant. - Service is awful. Had to ask twice to order food. Drinks orders forgotten. Over an hour for starters. Took over 3 hours for the entire meal due to continual delays. Rude and disinterested staff. Service, when it did appear, was rushed and error-prone. Borderline aggressive at times. - Food is not great. Low quality tough meat in shortcut generic sauces - very little variation in dishes that should be massively different. A rare highlight, the naan breads were particularly good. - Cost-wise it is massively overpriced. The service and food is like a very middle of the road generic curry house offering (i.e. not very good). But £80 for 2 people? We could have gone to Mughli or Dishoom for that much. - Very dated interior which has not been refurbished/redecorated in years. In spite of the high prices, clearly no money is spent on the facilities. - The place is FILTHY. To the extent I've contacted environmental health. The gents toilets were basically flooded with p**s, which had got out into the corridor and into a store cupboard (for food serving equipment). There was NO attempt by any staff to clean up (never mind regularly inspect), and it was clear from the rest of the bathroom it had not been cleaned properly in months. Disgusting. If this is what the publicly-visible facilities are like, what state is the back of house in?!

This was £38.48 delivered on Uber Eats…. £35 without the delivery fees. It has to be the second worst value meal I’ve ever had. 2 Pappadums £2.70… Small and tasty but never that price for 2. Makhan Chara (Award Winning Dish) - £15.50! Insanely priced and bang average. 6 pieces of chicken (which did taste fresh) in a creamy tomato soup sauce. Never seen smaller packaging for a curry. Onion Pakora Bhaji (4 Pieces) - £6.55 Reasonably tasty at a push, but the size of gobstoppers or a falafel and the most I’ve ever paid for some. Criminal pricing. Kathmandu Special Naan - £4.35 Well made and good quality, I can appreciate what they’re doing but I was hoping for it to be tastier. Mango Chutney - £1.95 Same as anywhere else except very expensive. Pilau Rice - £4.35 The rice was nice and probably some of the freshest rice I’ve had from an Indian. I was massively disappointed by this food. It’s an expensive place so I thought I would try it for delivery on the spur of the moment. Glad I never went for a full sit down meal here like I had planned to.

We came on a Friday night as I wanted to show my partner this place, was brought here myself a month or so ago and really enjoyed it!

Working in hospitality myself, I understand how busy it can get so we really didnt mind the time it took, we were there at the table from 8:30 and left around 10:15 but we really enjoyed all the food we tried throughout the evening! Really could not fault it.

The only reason Im giving 3 stars is I felt the service could really use improving. We both felt the waiter we had was rushing us, when we sat down and he asked us for poppadoms me and my partner were trying to figure out how much to get each, the waiter just looked frustrated and irritated we didn't already know a number and then when my partner gave him a number it felt as if he was judging him based on that, baring in mind, neither of us had eaten all day as we were looking forward to the meal.

Further to this as soon as we finished the starters he brings the plate with hot towels asking 'was it just starters' when we had ordered our mains as well prior.. I personally found this quite rude as it was coming across as if he was just trying to get us out as soon as he could, which if he had checked our bill this wouldnt have happened.

We also just felt like we were being stared at towards the end, as if we had to hurry up, my partner had attempted to ask for take out boxes for myself and he he was quickly interrupted by the waiter very bluntly saying that he will give us the boxes at the end to sort it out, which felt a bit odd to me.

All in all, we will probably return as we loved the food, but maybe on a day which...
