Tried bar and block today for Sunday lunch Arrived in one else in the place at 1pm what I thought was strange
Was shown to a booth the place was cold asked if wonted to order a drink what we ordered
Then ordered Sunday roast to be told umm not sure if we have beef to you want me to check for you what I found bizarre as how can you take our order for two Sunday beef dinner if you don’t have beef.
Well she came back and said yes we do have beef at this point my gut instinct was to just leave but give them the benefit of the doubt and ordered beef dinner and asked what it came with? And was told Sunday dinner things So we arsed beef dinner with just roast potatoes Yorkshire pudding gravy and mash
5 mins later she came back to tell us the Sunday dinner does not come with mash potatoes anymore but we can order two separate portions of mash and gravy So I said Ok I think it’s very strange a Sunday dinner does not come with mash
Around ten mins later our food arrived all I can describe is the worse looking Sunday dinner I’ve ever seen a plate full of rock hard roast potatoes a Yorkshire and three disgusting slices of beef what looked like it had been found in a fridge
We both looked at each other and laughed what is that then the lass returned with our separate portion of mash
What was in a pot and looked disgusting with a crust on top
The beef had no smell and felt like rubber and cold the roast potatoes where out of a packet and massively over cooked and the mash look like smash what had been put in a fridge for a week then warmed in the microwave
I asked the lass to take the lot away as we are not even going to try that never mind eat it
We go out ever Sunday for lunch and have done for the past 20 yrs that is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen and this is the first time I’ve ever in my life said just take it away I refuse to pay for that
No the wonder the place was so quite
The manager came over to ask why I sent the food back and this is the first complaint they have ever ever had about there Sunday dinners
All I can say is at 1pm on a Sunday with myself my lass and there was two old women arrived why we where waiting and a table of 3 came in as we where walking at at 1:30
I massively beg to differ 6/7 staff and 5 customers the place is a joke for Sunday dinner luckily enough we went and got some proper Sunday lunch within a 5 min walk and funny enough this place was...
Read moreWe thought we would give this place a go after reading several very good reviews and we weren't disappointed. There was a 2 for 1 cocktail offer on so I had two delicious 'Old Fashioned's, with Glenfiddich and an orange twist, whilst my wife ordered two Martinis. Both drinks were lovely. We ordered a three plate starter - Bar + Block do a selection of small plates as starters and we selected garlic prawns, 'burnt ends' and a crispy Chinese dish. I didn't like the sound of the 'Burnt Ends' but this turned out to be my favourite dish. It's just the offcuts from the steaks but the meat has been marinated in a wonderful sauce. My wife enjoyed the Chinese dish the best despite it being a little spicy and she not having much tolerance for spicy food. We both ordered the sirloin steaks, mine with chunky chips and my wife's with a baked potato. The side sauces were a little disappointing - the Bar + Block signature sauce was vinegary and reminded us both of HP sauce. I didn't think it went well with the steak but was an ok accompaniment to the chips. The Mexican sauce was more of a finely chopped salad. Perhaps it was just not what I was expecting. Both our steaks were delicious though. Perfectly cooked and seared closed. Very juicy and full of taste. Our side order of onion rings was just that but nicely cooked too. The service was great - Ben being very attentive and friendly - as were all of the staff. Prices are good for Newcastle and the quality of the food. The offer on the cocktails helped too.I would recommend this place and we would consider going back if we are...
Read moreMe and my partner often visit here as the lunch menu is value for money and we live close but today after 2yrs of popping in it deserves a review. The lunch menu of £10 for steak and frites is a bargain and today the steak was the best steak we've ever had from here. Might sound stupid but we've started going to the toilet to see who the chef is before we order. James who was on the bar, waiting on haha basically he was the only one f.o.h working and he was fantastic, so bubbly, attentive and my gf loved the dragon fruit mojito and shes had it before but his was beautiful and looked amazing. We did ask him when we payed if the chef was new as we hadn't seen him before and he said he usually works nights so asked his name and Dominic the chef..... hats off to you lad, our steaks were cooked to perfection (mine medium rare, gfs medium). Chips crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
My only criticism and I get it as I'm a chef myself so some places do it, others don't and its become more dont over the last 5yr but chips to me always taste better tossed in abit of salt (dont want peoples cholesterol going through the roof so just abit). Other than that when we nip in next week or the week after we will be looking for Dominic in the kitchen! Get his picture up saying king of steaks cause it was seasoned to perfection, melted in me mouth and been medium rare i think I could of cut mine...
