Black Garter — Restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne

Visiting from Canada, I went into the Black Garter for a pint or 3 after shopping a bit at Grainger Market. The first barmaid was obviously rude and / or racist as i was standing there for a good 3 or 4 minutes; there was nobody else waiting to be served but she still wouldn't serve me. Then another waitress came along and she was very friendly and poured me a perfect cold John Smith's. In fact she is the one who took my pic standing at the bar.

Met a wonderful group of people from Hebburn who knew friends in common, as I used to live in Newcastle 25 years ago before I moved to Canada. Met a friendly chap next table who had many an amusing tale to tell.

Later I was told this is probably the roughest bar in Newcastle! LOL ....but I didn't feel that way at all when i was in there. I got asked to spare a cigarette twice by the same 2 guys standing outside -- I gave him a cigarette the first time but not the second time. But there was no trouble when I said "Jez, share the thing guys, they're so expensive!"

No idea if the place deserves the nasty reputation it currently has. But I felt just fine in there and actually had a very enjoyable afternoon.

I gave only 3 stars for service because of the first waitress who chose to blatantly ignore me....

Nice pub ! Nice pints ! Nice staff ! Only one down fall is when u come out the pub u have beggers asking for money ! Witch is not safe at all ! Again friendly staff make u wellcome pints are cheap aswell ! Great pub meeting up with friends good music played aswell ! But l don't like the beggers in the area sitting across the black garter ! They come across asking for money ! Black garter needs work with police move them on ! Again great pub u can have a laugh lovely staff aswell ! Again fantastic pub cheap prices aswell staff are lovely ! But l have take star off because across the road beggers sitting outside near cash machine asking for money when u come out the black garter if black garter can work with police council move them away that would be fantastic many time l have come out black garter l been approach by beggers sometimes l feel unsafe anything can happen again if they sort that out then l give u 5 stars great lovely pub big tv screens...

Love this little place in the centre of Newcastle. 2 minute metro walk from monument metro station and close to local bus services. You get a nice drink from the black garter and is at a really reasonable price. They sell food here but I have never ate here yet. Its quite a popular little pub situated on the outskirts of the grainger Market. It has a great atmosphere and does a great little karaoke on the night time. The black garter is close to other pubs and plenty of places to eat,Although as I've said the black garter also serves food.it is also close to shops and eldon square.
