From the photographs you see you could easily be mistaken as we were to look forward to this nights stay. The historical buildings exterior shows character and warmth - some of which could do with rubbing off on the manager. Maybe he was having a bad day and we were adding to it as our booking had been "mis communicated", mixed up and then overcharged. First impressions of entering the reception and seeing a dirty, cluttered unorganised office is not a good start. A free glass of wine was offered although this would have been better served from the bar and not a couple of glasses he had under the desk and an open bottle sitting in the back of house area. If you like long dark and dreary passages, lots of glass doors the squeek and loose floor boards then you're in for a treat. The room doors are not secure ( loose yale locks only ). The bedroom was welcoming with original wood flooring, matching creaky bed and furnature. Two windows in the room which neither opened nor shut without a hammer and plane, but that's character shash windows. Unfortunately, that meant the room temperature after one hour with two electric radiators on full got no higher than 16.7 degrees and it's not possible to remove your coat if you sit down for a while. The bathroom was white tiles and a small run at the door got it to open over the bump in the floor. With one window which was broken, didn't shut and was unsafe, this room was bitterly cold. The bath panel had a large hole in it covered by the bath mat. The shower was in a bad condition and we refused to touch it never mind use it. A used sticky plaster greeted us beside the bed - lovely ! The bar during happy hour was used by locals as well, who seemed to get free drink ! Maybe at the prices we were charged they were subsidised. eg One Stella and a rum and splash of coke - £7.50 - that's happy hour ? It was nice to see staff uniform was optional and you couldn't tell who worked there and who just went behind the bar and helped themselves. Bar toilets ( male & female ) tired public toilet feel, cold and not heated hand dryer working in the mens. Restaurant meal was impressive. Thanks to the chef for an outstanding job there. Perfectly cooked, presented and at speed - at least someone saved the day. Altogether a disappointing effort and I'd suggest paying no more than £39 / night B&B for...
Read moreLove this little pub and use it on few occasions whilst up Newcastle. Whether it's for one quick pint or stay for few hours. Drinks are nice and at good price. Staff are nice and friendly. Place some great tunes. Just a shame they don't do snacks, even just toasties would do but il definitely be back. They have a brilliant beer garden out back all fenced off but you have to abide by the outside rules, like your not allowed to take top off outside on hot day. lovely to sit out on a hot day with lovely cold pint with ice. Sits quite few people. It's right close to good bus service and local metro. Shops are close by and plenty of places to grab either quick bite to eat or pop in to a restaurant of choice. Quite a popular little pub with great tunes Pub hasn't changed at all still great little pub with some great tunes being played x "Update" No change Still lovely place to go and have a few drinks whilst your up Newcastle. Read moreWould have been 5 stars if upstairs was still open, my wife and I were engaged here nearly forty years ago. Still a proper pub, but watch that last step returning from the gents, ouch. Called on our way to uni to see Steve Hillage and Steve interesting Davis! 🤔 Excellent night, past the Old George next morning, hasn't that changed? 😴Thanks for the reply from management, from the mid seventies this was always an essential part of any visit to Newcastle, wether going to Westgate road for Motorbike parts or visits to the Mayfair or City Hall. It's in my dna, just like the Man on the moon and...
