University of Newcastle exhibition space and gallery. Hosting regular exhibitions of works that vary in style, size and period. The highlight is often the annual Fine Art degree shows in June and July. Exhibiting a dizzying array of contemporary art from new artists across a range of disciplines. The gallery itself is well set out with small shop, toilets and staff to answer queries. Not a huge space but perfect for an afternoon visit. Home to the internationally significant Merzbarn by Kurt Schwitters, the only permanent exhibit in the gallery.

Roy Lichtenstein exhibition was well worth a visit. On the day I went it was pouring with rain so the gallery was very quiet. Plenty room to view the pictures from a distance and get up really close too. The booklets you could pick up to read about the works were excellent. There to pick up and read as you went round. Strangely nobody else did! And remember there are toilets in the basement if needed if the ground floor ones are busy.

Giving two stars might seem harsh. I appreciate this free artistic space and the friendly staff, but the art exhibits just don't do anything for me. They don't create any emotional response. Don't get me wrong, I'm not averse to modern art, Banksy has me in fits of laughter and if art can be described as a form of presentation that can generate an emotional response, whatever that might be, then Banksy makes the grade. But I just can't find any meaning or emotional reaction to the current collection of exhibits by Catrin Huber. The Story of Kurt Schwitters life and artistic contributions is interesting, particularly his Merz Barn Wall, but once again, it doesn't do anything for me.

The current seasonal exhibit is a bit disappointing. The very abstract industrial look of art. The rest of the art is not that impressive either. Some handmade artworks mostly focus on demonstrating the shape of the material, the paintings are just too obscure. However, it is still a nice and neat small gallery (only one floor, take stairs or elevator) to walk around that is connected to the campus.

Walked in thinking one of the Shaun the sheep was in there, didn't even know this place existed - some great educational pieces, they had a great kids art session on - drawing/ kids books/ chalkboard/craft supplies etc even found out they rum a home educational group once a month which is literally perfect for us. Excited to go back - staff were very friendly 😊

I Love this place. I visit it all the time. My recent visit was to the British Abstract Artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912 – 2004) was a leading member of the St Ives School of artists who contributed to the advancement of British Abstract Art in the 20th Century. I love her work
