Eshaal's Fish and Chips — Restaurant in Newport

I sometimes buy a takeaway meal from here and I have always found the staff perfectly polite. Maybe the people who have posted reviews saying the staff were rude have some sort of attitude problem. Try being polite to people in the first place and you might get treated the same way.

There MAY be a cultural issue here. The people who run this place don't seem to quite fit with the way some people in Newport are. I suspect some of the customers may come in after a night's drinking and start getting mouthy/aggressive, whereas the staff here are quiet and seem to just want to keep their heads down and do a job. They are not particularly warm and friendly, but they are very polite in my experience. For God's sake, just try getting less drunk and more quiet/polite. Then you might find that people respond better to you.

As for the 'review' with a photo of the ad in the window, suggesting there's a 'vile' grooming operation going on, there's no evidence for that whatsoever. I'm not sure if it's legal for them to specify the gender of person. Nevertheless, there are legitimate reasons why they may want someone in that category (female student). Maybe they figure they are more likely to be quiet, well behaved and pleasant than certain other kinds of people. I'm not saying for sure that there's nothing bad going on, but you can't make these allegations with ZERO actual evidence.

Finally, the food. Well, it is what it is. It's fine in my experience (pie and chips), although I've not had the fish or curry dishes, so can't comment on what...

Been here multiple times, and had mixed reactions everytime. Felt their signature dishes - Masala battered Fish & Chips and Indian Chicken Curry with Chips/ Rice both are mediocre at the best. I doubt it’s worth at 7£ given it’s taste. However, the quantity, the presentation and packing all are great. They are very generous with fries etc.

Have tried other dishes too - the battered sausages at 2£ which tasted okay, and their chicken and beef burgers at 3.5£ which were also good. Their customer friendliness is worth mentioning tho - the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The place isn’t very big, but good enough to seat a big group.

I’d take one more star away for the notoriety of the region. This area itself - around the market square is known for being unsafe. This shop didn’t have a working camera and the staff won’t take any responsibility if something goes wrong - which is highly likely given the nature of the region and the kind of people who loiter around this region at nights.

Absolutely appalling from start to finish. Easily one of the worst takeaway experiences I’ve ever had. Food arrived late, stone cold, and looked like it had been thrown together by someone who couldn’t care less. The chips were soggy, the meat was dry and tasteless, and everything was dripping in grease — not in a good way.

To make matters worse, the portion sizes were pathetic for the ridiculous prices they charge. I’ve had better food from a petrol station. Whoever is managing this place clearly has no standards — the packaging was sloppy, items were missing from the order, and when I called to complain, the staff were rude and completely uninterested in helping and hung up the phone on me.

Avoid this place like the plague. Total waste of money and time....
