If anyone has visited this place in its previous incarnation then you will agree that the transformation is staggering. From the moment you walk through the door you know this place intends to be the real deal. What I know about interior design you could write on the back of a broken poppadom but this place is very easy on the eye. The place was busy when we arrived at 7pm and that is always a good sign. We were however surprised and disappointed when there was no a la carte menu on offer. From the set menu I ordered chicken bhuna with pilau rice and my partner ordered butter chicken with boiled/steamed rice. We didn't order starters, and more on that later. Two safe choices for mains plus a garlic nan to share. A round of poppadoms was immediately brought to us and the 3 dips were individually described to us. Where was the finely chopped onion salad?? My favourite was conspicuous by its unexplained absence. I had to order a pint of Cobra to assuage my disappoinment. Moving on. To be honest I have rarely tasted a better bhuna dish, with no proceesed chicken here, but perfectly cooked chunks of genuine chicken breast meat. The taste of the sauce was off-the-scale delicious. So far, so very good. However this is where the wheels come off a bit. On 2 separate occassions the fine waiter attempted to place starters on our table, which had obviously been ordered by other diners. Perhaps this was a subliminal message for us to order starters next time. I also tasted the butter chicken opposite and again, it is difficult to remember when I tasted a better sauce. Halfway through our meal I treated myself to another Cobra. Why? because I like beer but also the chillies in my bhuna were proving to be very lively indeed. In truth I did leave a little of my sauce un-eaten as the rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1982 (red hot chili peppers) had me beat. I explained this to the owner and that perhaps I should have ordered something a bit milder. Not his fault in any shape or form but he apologised and even offered to buy me another pint 'on him'. I thanked him but declined his kind offer. That is not something you will see every day. The bill, when it arrived was not unreasonable. Infact it did represent very good value in my opinion. Drinking pints in any restaurant is always going to inflate the cost. However what did concern me the most was that 3 pints of Cobra now appeared on the docket, and not the 2 that I had consumed. How does that happen at a table for 2 and 1 person drinking tap water? Hmmm Overall this is a fantastic restaurant serving fantastic food. Newry was in need of this place. Hopefully next time, and there will definitely be a next time, there will be an a la carte menu and I will drink that mysterious 3rd pint. Date of...
Read moreFinest quality food and service. Went to Guru Newry for an impromptu dinner with a friend and we both loved everything about this place: the food was superb, tasted so fresh, clean and flavoursome; wine & cider were high quality, reserva house wine is an absolute rarity and in Guru I was served this rarity which also tasted amazing and was reasonably priced. A jackpot! I like Indian cuisine a lot but am a fussy eater while my friend is generally apprehensive about Indian food, yet in Guru the quality of food, the authentic courteous service, atmosphere and high attention to detail have surpassed our expectations in all regards. It’s an amazing restaurant and has this non-imposing elegant, authentic vibe, and also lovely comfortable seats spaced out appropriately without near touching shoulders with other customers.
For the purpose of this review, we had Desi Chicken Pakora, Vegetarian Chana Masala and Lamb Rogan Josh, and some pistachio ice-cream. Everything was top notch: the taste of food, the beautiful crockery, the artisan serving on the plates and bowls, and reasonable pricing to top it all off. I cannot recommend it enough.
Thank you to everyone in Guru for looking after us tonight, it was all fabulous and I look forward to being back....
Read moreWe booked a table for 6 a month in advance for 8pm. We showed up on time and were told to wait 5 mins. Ok.
15 mins go by, and we ask if the table is almost ready. We are told 5 more mins.
Another 15 mins go by, and we are starting to lose patience as one of our party of 6 is heavily pregnant. We asked if the table would be ready in the next 10 mins, and they said the table is almost ready as they are leaving. One of out party walk past and see that they are in the middle of ordering desert.
One last time, we asked if a table would be available soon as we are now 45 mins waiting. The owner then starts shouting for us to get out and that he won't serve us for being "rude".
A table that we booked over a month previous and we arrive on time and end up waiting almost 1 hour, with one member heavily pregnant and kept being told to wait 5 mins is unacceptable. Then, to be thrown by the most rude and aggressive owner we have ever encountered has just ended our night in complete disappointment, and we'll never be back.
We ended up heading around the corner to Courtney's Steakhouse and had a lovely meal with great service. Highly recommend.
