Both visits to Umi have been absolutely amazing and totally opened my tastebuds to new flavours, textures and words I am slowly learning. On my first visit, I went for a takeout volcano scallop and avocado roll (which is on the dinner menu). The staff were lovely and couldn’t have been more helpful to accommodate my takeout order. For my first proper experience with sushi I was amazed and eagerly awaited my next visit. I stopped in today on my break from college and I was greeted at the door by a very charasmatic and lovely server who directed me to my table. I cannot stress how brilliant the staff are- even helping me with a chopsticks lesson šŸ˜‚and answering any questions I had about the sushi. I ordered a green tea (which came in a cast iron tea pot) and the crab California roll. As you can see from the photos it looks delicious and tastes even better! I ended up ordering the beef sushi that was recommend by my server and WOW!!!!!! If you are in Derry you need to try these, flavours, texture and just an all round delicious treat. I have to commend Umi on giving Derry some new flavours and doing it so well! The restaurant is such a good vibe with chill beats that get you grooving whilst enjoying your food. Not to be missed- recommend it 5āļø and can’t wait for my next visit

Umi had been on my saved list for a while, so it was fabulous to experience it on one of the best times of years in Derry - Hallowe’en. We were mainly looked after by one very personable gentleman, though we did get served by a waitress wearing a spider hairband, who I found a bit abrupt. The menu was just right, not too many options but enough variety. Good portion sizes and excellent flavour profiles. Hilariously, they attempted to serve sake in Prosecco glasses and the price/serving ratio was impressive but they do have the traditional jug and cups if you ask but I think traditionalists/purists like myself would be slightly horrified at having it in a Prosecco glass 🤣🤣 Only gripes: - plates to be preheated - the Korean dirty fries cooled much too quickly - the table just felt a bit sticky to me - the pedal of bin in the ladies’ bathroom was broken (but I did love they had hygiene products stocked) - music was great but just a touch to loud for me to hear my fellow diner Finally, the dessert - rice pudding parfait - has to be one of the most incredible, flavourally complex desserts I’ve ever had in my life and I’ve a huge sweet tooth. It was genuinely mind blowing so serious props to the chef(s) for that creation! Highly recommend. I will definitely be back!

I had the pleasure of dining at umi, and the staff truly made the experience exceptional. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and a welcoming atmosphere. The staff were all friendly and approachable, making us feel right at home.

What impressed me the most was their attentiveness to my severe allergy. As someone who struggles with food allergies, it can be quite difficult to find a restaurant that can accommodate my needs. However, the staff went above and beyond to ensure that I was catered for. They consulted with the chef to make sure my meal was safe for me to eat and made changes to the food so I wasn't left out.

Not only did they provide me with a delicious meal, but they also made sure to check in with me throughout the night to make sure I was doing okay. I truly appreciate the extra effort they put in to make sure I had a great dining experience.

And let's not forget about the cocktails and food – they were simply unbelievable. The mixologist clearly knew what they were doing as the cocktails were bursting with flavor. And the food was just as impressive. Each dish was beautifully presented and tasted even better than it looked.

Overall, I cannot praise the staff enough. Their kindness, attentiveness, and willingness to go the extra mile truly made our dining experience one to remember. I highly recommend umi to anyone looking for that little something extra and a friendly atmosphere, along with delicious food and drinks.

Thank you to the staff for making our night...

Very expensive for what you get. When the food was good it was great, but some dishes need improvement.

The Ramen used udon noddles & was an incredibly small portion for £20. Was served in a very shallow bowl, with very little broth or noodles - not at all what you expect when ordering ramen. The broth was an over-powering beef flavour. Wouldn't recommend esp considering the price and small size. If you've never eaten ramen before & have no expectations you might enjoy. The crab bao was a tempura crab in a pretty tasteless sauce and dressing. No flavour. The batter really took away from any taste the crab might have had - it could have been anything under the batter. Really don't recomend.

The sushi was tasty, as were the vegan dumplings. The steamed veggies were also really good. Panna cotta dessert, though expensive (Ā£7.50 for small portion), was also great. Staff were really lovely.

Would be great to see more vegan options for the big plates (partner is vegan). There was one big dish option for vegans (& was the same big plate option for the veggie). One small dish vegan option.

Great to see more places in Derry serving a more diverse range of food. I had high expectations given the great reviews and high price tag. Given the expense (over £70 for 2 people and no drinks) and small portions, I really would have expected the food to hit the mark, but unfortunately I was a bit disappointed. Really appreciate them trying to do something different though. Would try again but not...

I have been to Umi before and really enjoyed it. The food had been prepared with intricate care resulting in beautifully presented, delicate, fresh, innovative dishes. I returned recently to celebrate my husband's birthday and we were bitterly disappointed with the food on offer. The time consuming items on the menu, which previously justified the high price tag, have been replaced with deep-fried items that can be produced quickly and cheaply. Whereas before I had enjoyed a bao filled with a flavoursome pulled pork and fresh, light, crunchy veg - now it is filled with some deep-fried luminous pink abomination that purports to be Korean chicken. With a £10 price tag, this is an absolute joke. It amounts to little more than chipper food at high-end restaurant prices. The duck spring rolls were beautifully done and I can't fault them but again, the £11 price tag for 2 spring rolls was just insane. My husband enjoyed his sushi but I felt the tuna was a little tired and not quite as fresh as it should have been. The beer selection was also pretty mediocre with no IPAs on the menu, just a selection of the usual asian lagers. The service was very good with very pleasant helpful staff. I really want to like this place and love what they are trying to do but their standards have slipped so badly. I think I'll be spending my money in Mekong...
