The barman, when I asked him which bitter he recommended, asked if I preferred hoppy or malty, offered me two samples unasked, and showed the small display bottles for assessing colour. I can honestly say this has never happened to me before, and left a great impression - as did their 'house beer'. The place has a huge arched, glazed roof which makes it spacious and bright. On the minus side the furniture is in places a bit dilapidated, and the 'open mic' music on that wednesday needed a bit more rehearsal perhaps, but it's in keeping with the past of the venue and pubs must do 'special' nights to survive. It's a 'proper'. Just some unobtrusive background music but a relaxed feel with people just chatting, creating a good background hubbub. Food is limited to sarnies, salads & ploughman's.
