Two years ago, I got soaked in Double Vodka when I came here on a night out. At least I think it was, based on the smell my jacket still gives off. But last week I made a sudden, unexpected stop at Popworld as part of a bar crawl. If they'd informed me we'd be attending Popworld, its very likely I would've blocked them on all socials.
When we entered, that welcome smell returned to me: the vodka. While unpleasantly tarnishing my jacket, it was a welcome scent to behold in Popworld. It lured me to the bar like The Pied Piper. The only issue being that, it was so crowded that I had to divert through the dancefloor to get to the centre of the bar. The sticky popworld dancefloor, a true staple.
So why the change of heart? Why am I giving it a positive review? Because, fellow reader, last week I witnessed something utterly spectacular. I witnessed the Gym Bunny. Not the person, the cocktail. My bartender, Lindsey, concocted a masterpiece infront of me in mere seconds. Lightning-fast. Unfortunately I couldn't drink very quickly so I only had the one drink but it was a major improvement to the one I had a couple years back, I think.
The DJ was also incredible, my favourite songs surrounded me as memories from the 80s flashed before my eyes like my old friends had come to visit. The Conga. ABBA. Grease. They were all still here and with me now; and I danced with them once more. Dancing Queen.
I gave the atmosphere 4 stars because the toilets could do with...
Read moreOur experience of this venue was tarnished by a door supervisor who thought it was acceptable and justified to manhandle me and grab my wrist (presumably to question the legitimacy of my stamp) after I had gone outside with my friend whilst he smoked a cigarette and we had returned to go back inside. This was at the top of the staircase. He grabbed and held my wrist for a considerable amount of time using unacceptable force and continued with his firm grip as I questioned what he was doing. Other staff later tried to justify his behaviour by saying they are taught to do this if they feel they are in danger or somebody is approaching them 'offensively' - which in this case was an absolutely ridiculous and poor excuse for terrible behaviour and customer service. The CCTV would show what happened. This man should not be working in a job like this or at a minimum should be re-trained and monitored. A senior door supervisor would not provide his name to me or the other guy saying "what do you need my name for". Inevitably we are contacting local authorities, the SIA and leadership team at Popworld HO. This is unfortunate as this is usually a good chain of nightclubs and the atmosphere was brilliant inside. Keep your distance from the door staff gentleman - people like that don't just do...
Read moreI was out with my sister on Saturday night and we were both dancing the night away. Place didn’t seem too bad and I was having fun. Unfortunately, I accidentally knocked a tray of shots from one of the people working there - a harmless mistake, and one I was told had happened twice that night. I profusely apologised and didn’t want to be a bother.
She told me I had to pay for them all. A bouncer came over and also intimidated me into paying, and as I didn’t want to cause any trouble whilst drunk, I paid £35. What I didn’t know is that my sister saw other staff laughing at this occasion, which, as an experienced former pub manager, got her very angry. After going to the bar manager and being told that she isn’t responsible for the staff on the dance floor, we decided to leave and enjoy ourselves elsewhere.
It’s a shame, as we did enjoy ourselves up to that point - but this policy, especially with the bouncer’s intimidation, is absolutely uncalled for. Drinks staff should not be walking so close to the dance floor and if I were sober I’d have never agreed to pay the...
