we booked a table for 2 last night at 6pm , and arrived 10 minutes early. we were greeted by the host who was as miserable as they come, being a waitress i understand the job can get stressful but the restaurant was pretty much empty.we were sat on a rubbish table in the centre of the restaurant, even though there were plenty of tables closer to the edge and out of the way, as i’m sure you can understand nobody wants to be bumped into by waiters etc on a date night. besides this it was ridiculously cold and bring it was sunny out, we asked this host if we could sit outside. she said it would be 15mins and for some reason tried to make out like there was tons of wasps outside and it would ruin our experience which we thought was strange. it was is if she was trying to convince us to stay inside and as if being outside would be a pain for her. we wanted to go outside anyways and we’re happy to wait the 15minutes. we then asked the host if it would be ok for us to sit at this table inside until the other came available as it was clear to me the inside of the restaurant wasn’t busy. and to be honest? her response shocked me. she said no because she would have to relay the table after we were done. are you joking?! it’s two sets of cutlery… THAT IS IT. to be honest the host seemed like she just didn’t want us there and her attitude towards customers is appalling. i get that the job is hard sometimes but it’s not that hard to stick a smile on your face when greeting us at the door or speaking to us… is it? we agreed to sit at the bar and wait, where we had two cocktails, the bar staff were lovely and chatty and had huge smiles on their faces which brought the mood back up. when our table was ready, the host came over but as soon as my boyfriend stood up she snapped as if to accuse him of not paying for our drinks. which i just thought was beyond rude. by this time we felt like we were being a nuisance from her reactions and behaviour towards us. anyways, we were seated outside in the walkway and asked the waitress if we could move to the table next to us, which was the same size but just more out of the way. after this, everything ran smoothly. our waitress was lovely and chatty and gave us some help and recommendations with the menu and every other waiter/waitress on shift were smiley and couldn’t do enough for you, one of them literally got me a blanket as it was getting later n the sun was going down which was lovely and cozy. coming from a waitress… great job, honestly. you guys are the foundation of that restaurant. 3/4 way through eating we ordered two cokes . they were brought over by a runner who did not look like he was comfortable at all holding that tray. he could barely walk with the two cokes on there and it was wobbling like anything. safe to say i was right. the kid spilt the entire thing down my front and soaked me and my phone head to toe in coke. and all he could say? ‘oh god, oh god, oh god’ on repeat. i didn’t get an apology from this kid and i’m pretty sure he went and hid in the back somewhere until we left. luckily, being in service for two years i didn’t make a scene and embarrass him i got up and walked to the bathroom to clean myself up. safe to say? i was fuming. i was drenched chest down in sticky coke, my new shoes and dress ruined. not happy. in fact i would have appreciated an apology off the kid. after this i had to go and pay for some new clothes so that i didn’t have to drive home soaking wet. this got me even angrier. the fact i had to pay for new clothes on my date night because a drink had been thrown all over me by what is claimed to be a top notch restaurant in oxford… are you joking?! fuming. i get accidents happen but the host was miserable from the very beginning and the runner should be trained to the point where he’s comfortable carrying a tray, before you let him out on the floor. rubbish visit, which is a shame because the chefs and waitresses...
Read moreIt was my friends birthday and we made a trip from London to Oxford to celebrate.
We asked to move seat as we were too close to the singer-it was no problem. We thank the gentleman with the long nails. So helpful.
I like to get the name of my server, ours was Poppy. We had the roast lovely meal -no problem
I made a bday booking and no bday firework came to our table, so I discretly reminded Poppy - no problem
The bday plate came along without a cake and it looked lonely. So we requested a cake (there was no issue paying for what we wanted).
However, another waitress informed Poppy infront of my party (apparently Poppy was new) that there was a fee for the cake and we were not to have it for free. The conversation was unneeded and we had not requested anything for free. We just wanted a cake, not details of other clients expecting freebies
I had no understanding why a waitresses who had not served us, proceeded to intervene when we had made a simple request
I removed myself from my table and raised my concern with the unwelcome waitress (no name). She was hostile, rude and curt. Adding further insult to injury.
I requested a manager and was met with a man presumably from the backoffice who I had not seen on the shop floor.
He did not deescalate the situation and it was clear he had chosen to be on the side of his staff.
He did nothing to remedy, offered a token apology for my feelings of disappointment and offered no good will gestures. Ultimately my efforts to celebrate my friends 47th bday have been tarnished by a hostile experience. That I believe was so unnecessary.
I thought I had done everything right. I had alerted staff to the bday when I arrived I had registered a bday on my booking. The bday was forgotten and that's fine. Things do happen.
But the way my compliant was handled. The energy of the manager who was determined to honour his staff rather than remedy the situation was shocking.
I don't need to hear stories of clients trying to get a free bday cakes. I don't care. I just want to have a positive, memorable experience with my dear friend.
What we experienced was very saddening and my pictures are left with sad undertones.
Great food. But between the manager and waitress ( whose names I don't have) rather upsetting and...
